The article analyzes the role of the first lady (Ludmila Kuchma and Kateryna Yushchenko, respectively) for the office of the President of Ukraine between 1996 and 2010. The article seeks answers to the following question: What are the roles of the first ladies and to what extent the first ladies may have an influence on the position of the President in the political system of Ukraine? For the purpose of the project, the following hypothesis was formulated: The first ladies exerted a significant influence on the position of the President in the political system of Ukraine. Such a hypothesis was positively verified with the system analysis and comparative methods. Selected time frame results from normative changes of the system of government in Ukraine, and transition from the presidential-parliamentary republic towards the presidential and parliamentary presidency. The paper is based on multiple distinct sources, and empirical data was gathered from publicly available Internet sources, articles, and official documents. The results of the conducted research confirm that the strength of the position of the President office, to a large extent, depends on non-normative factors, including the role of the first lady.

W artykule przeanalizowano rolę pierwszych dam (Ludmiły Kuczmy oraz Kateryny Juszczenko) w sprawowaniu urzędu prezydenta Ukrainy w latach 1996–2010. Przed rozpoczęciem badań sformułowano pytanie badawcze (czy pierwsze damy mogły wpływać na pozycję prezydenta w systemie politycznym?) oraz hipotezę badawczą (pierwsze damy wywierały znaczący wpływ na pozycję prezydenta w systemie politycznym). Przedział czasowy wybrano ze względu na zachodzące w tym okresie normatywne przekształcenia systemu rządów na Ukrainie z republiki prezydencko-parlamentarnej w parlamentarno-prezydencką. W badaniach posłużono się analizą systemową i komparatystyczną. Przy opracowywaniu artykułu skorzystano ze źródeł książkowych, prasowych i internetowych. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań pozwalają stwierdzić, iż pozycja prezydenta w dużej mierze jest uzależniona od czynników nienormatywnych, w tym od roli pierwszej damy.
