In 'the course of laboratory tests carried out on the historic gypsum plate from the Wiślica Collegiate Church it has been found indis,pensable to protect its surface against damage. For this purpose the authors have applied the water solution of gypsum normally used in building and characteristic of its considerable content of CaiS0 4 V2H2O with which the sample gypsum plates were moistened. The tests have shown that abrasion decreased by five times thus allowing to start the works in situ, i.e. in the Collegiate Church where is preserved the historic plate. One of important advantages of the above method of hardening the gypsum consists in that for this process the material identical with that original is being used and the harmful chemical effects can therefore be avoided.
