The article deals with the methodology of processing names of pharmaceutical products in the monolingual Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech (Akademický slovník současné češtiny), under preparation at the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences since 2012. The article focuses on the choice of genera proxima in the explanatory definitions and their segmentation according to different shades of meaning. Special attention is paid to the selection of appropriate examples illustrating the meaning of the given lexical units and to the use of a terminological label for each dictionary entry. Based on a sample of entries belonging to this lexico-semantic group of words, the article aims to compare the approach to their lexicographical processing in the forthcoming dictionary and in previous Czech, Slovak and English monolingual dictionaries.

The aim of the article is to present the Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech (Akademický slovník současné češtiny). It is a new monolingual dictionary of contemporary Czech work on which has been in progress since 2012 at the Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the CR. The Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech is a medium-sized dictionary with an anticipated total of 120,000–150,000 lexical units. Its objective is to document the widespread vocabulary of contemporary Czech. The article deals with dictionary-making principles concerning both its macrostructure and microstructure.

The paper deals with processing the entries describing colours in the Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech (ASSČ), the priority being the explanation of basic meanings of primary colours and lexicalised colour shades. The definitions ought to include all semantic features, be clear and should reflect the present world and the experience of the user. Special attention is given to the explanations of adverbs and compound adjectives. The paper also follows the decision-making process leading to the list of entries within a given category, based on the frequency of the lemma in the SYN corpus, and discusses the problem of appropriate exemplification.

The aim of the article is to propose a suitable system of usage classifications for a Czech monolingual dictionary in preparation. We presuppose that the labeling of linguistic items should reflect the situation of their typical usage rather than their association with a structural variety of Czech (e.g. Standard Czech, dialects or Common Czech). The proposed system is based on our understanding of the Czech language situation as consisting of two basic communicative domains (or sets of communicative situations): (1) everyday communication and (2) the realization of higher communicative aims. Other criteria of distinction applied within both domains are: the spoken or oral form of the utterance, typically Bohemian or Moravian use, the position of the linguistic item on the axis of high, medium and low style, expressiveness of the linguistic item, its position on the temporal axis (archaic, historical, new…), and its affiliation with a social sphere (subject field). The combination of these criteria yields many categories, some of which are empty, irrelevant or marginal to the classification of lexical items. In reducing these categories to those relevant for lexicographic description, we propose and define eleven basic labels and eight two-part label combinations (though other, multi-part combinations are also possible).

In dictionaries, exemplification serves to illustrate the use of headwords. This article attempts to contribute to the elaboration and specification of the general exemplification principles, as demonstrated on the material of the manuscript of The Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech. It deals with the adequate length of the exemplification as a whole and the length of individual examples. It also devotes attention to content-related aspects, with emphasis on the socially sensitive topic of gender. Examples should not have controversial content, otherwise the reader’s attention can go off in an unwanted direction. They should not insult or hurt anybody, yet typical examples cannot be entirely ignored either, as the dictionary must not be censored.

The present paper explores the topic of authorial dictionaries – a subject rarely discussed in Czech academic discourse. The aim of the study is to present several forms of authorial dictionaries, focusing mainly on current and up-to-date methods. At the beginning, the study explores two viewpoints (J. Mattausch and H. E. Wiegand) of the taxonomy of authorial dictionaries, of which the second is subjected to slightly stronger criticism. The article also looks at the development of this special lexicographical discipline. Finally, the paper mentions future perspectives of modern corpus devices in the sphere of authorial lexicography.

This article analyses the treatment of the names of bakery and confectionery products in the Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech (Akademický slovník současné češtiny). It devotes attention to the choice of genus proximum for explanation and to the role of exemplification in illustrating the meaning of the given lexical unit. Based on a sample of entries, we aim to present how the method of the ASSČ differs from the practice of previous Czech monolingual dictionaries.
