Human work is a key value, which the competent actualization contributes to building a positive life. It was assumed that the value of work cannot be understood without exploring human values. The man can be understood only through the prism of his work. Making attempts to classify the value of work in the axiological way, we accept that this value is created on the foundation of autotelic: Goodness, Truth and Beauty. The work itself is the heterolitic value constituting the grounds for the formation of other values.

Praca jest podstawową formą aktywności ludzkiej. Wartość pracy w życiu człowieka kształtuje się pod wpływem procesów edukacyjnych, kulturowych, społecznych i ekonomicznych. Prezentowane wyniki badań empirycznych pozwalają ukazać miejsce pracy w systemie wartości osób migrujących zarobkowo. Praca jawi się tu najczęściej jako wartość instrumentalna, służąca zdobywaniu innych wartości, niepozbawiona jednak aspektów wartości samej w sobie (autotelicznej).

Work is the basic form of human activity. The value of work in people’s lives is shaped under the influence of educational, cultural, social and economic processes. The following results of empirical research show the position of work in the hierarchy of values of people migrating to earn their living. In this case, work is mostly perceived as instrumental value being a means of gaining other values. However, it is not devoid of some aspects of being a value in itself (autotelic).

The article deals with the tasks undertaken by Warsaw Charitable Society with particular reference to upbringing through work realised by this organization. At the outset, the author outlines the background and circumstances of founding the association. Further, the author presents the areas of work handled by the charges of WCS and extensive benefits from this type of engagement. People who are especially deserving for the organization and their efforts in raising the status of the poor and the unemployed are also indicated in the text. The cited facts from the history of WCS clearly confirm that long-time activities of Warsaw Charitable Society in creating awareness to the poor of the value of work and benefits that come from it lead people in need to be interested in employment making decent life possible. For more than one hundred years of its existence the organization has been trying not only to provide decent living conditions for older people, the disabled and others affected by fate, but also instil a belief that work makes them important and helpful individuals. What is more, it gives self-esteem, satisfaction and gratification.

Artykuł dotyczy działań podejmowanych przez Warszawskie Towarzystwo Dobroczynności, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem realizowanego przez nie wychowania przez pracę. Na wstępie autor zarysowuje kontekst i okoliczności powstania Towarzystwa. Następnie szczegółowo przedstawia obszary prac wykonywanych przez podopiecznych WTD oraz rozległe korzyści, jakie przynosiło tego typu zaangażowanie. W artykule zostały także wskazane nazwiska postaci szczególnie zasłużonych dla Towarzystwa oraz ich starania o podniesienie statusu osób ubogich i bezrobotnych. Przytoczone fakty z dziejów WTD jednoznacznie potwierdzają, iż długoletnie działania Warszawskiego Towarzystwa Dobroczynności w uświadamianiu ubogim wartości pracy i korzyści, jakie z niej płyną, doprowadziły w rezultacie do zainteresowania potrzebujących zatrudnieniem, umożliwiającym godne życie. Przez ponad sto lat swego istnienia Towarzystwo starało się nie tylko zapewnić starcom, kalekom i innym poszkodowanym przez los, godziwe warunki życia, ale także wpoić przekonanie, że praca czyni z nich jednostki potrzebne i użyteczne, daje poczucie własnej wartości, satysfakcję i zadowolenie.

The aim of this paper is to present the value of labour in the opinion of working prisoners. Work as a value has been presented and its understanding in the holistic way as a multidimensional process has been underlined. Nowadays labour is perceived as one of the most important instruments of resocialization. It enables reducing prisonization in total institutions. The results of the research show that the working prisoners treat labour as a privilege rather than a duty. They would not like to leave their job, no matter whether they have applied for it on their own or it has been commissioned to them and whether they receive a salary.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wartości pracy w opinii pracujących osób pozbawionych wolności. Na początku zaprezentowano rozumienie pracy jako wartości, podkreślając jednoczenie konieczność ujmowania jej holistycznie, wielowymiarowo. Praca stanowi obecnie jeden z najważniejszych środków resocjalizacji. Dzięki niej możliwe jest przeciwdziałanie prizonizacji, która zachodzi w instytucji totalnej, jaką jest zakład karny. Wyniki badań pokazują, że pracujący osadzeni nie traktują pracy jako uciążliwego obowiązku, lecz raczej jako przywilej. Nie chcieliby także zrezygnować z pracy, jaką wykonują. Nie ma znaczenia, czy sami się zgłosili do pracy, czy została im zlecona i czy otrzymują wynagrodzenie.
