Integrating Management Competencies Development with an Organizational Culture Formation

The paper presents the first results of the IGA/2012/7 project “Versatility of Organizational Management and its Reflection in the Area of Organizational Culture“. The paper tries to answer in particular a question if there exist and what are the relations between a process of management competencies development and process of organizational culture creation and change. The research is based upon two methods: (1) Leadership Versatility Index® (LVI ®) and Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS). The research data are presented in a form of two cases. Qualitative analysis of these data has led to two preliminary conclusions: (1) Some of the research expectations concerning an existence of the relations between organization´s management versatility and organizational culture might be confirmed in a future; (2) DOCS data can bring a new light on the LVI ® results and on the process of management competencies development. They help managers to understand that a change and development of their management competencies is not their personal business but a need with important strategic consequences for the whole organization. Reliable answers to all research questions and hypothesises are conditioned by a statistical analysis of the data collected in more organizations, however.

A Postmodern Reading of Versatile Writing in Eugene O’Neill’s Mourning Become Electra

The present paper will offer a postmodern reading of interdisciplinarity by investigating the multifaceted writing and the coexistence between various disciplines in Eugene O’Neill’s Mourning Becomes Electra (1931). Versatility in the O’Neillian text is elaborated through the intersection between psychoanalysis and Greek mythology. In this respect, the Oedipus complex will be analyzed from a Lacanian perspective. The rationale behind choosing Lacan is his efforts “[to transform] psychoanalysis from a modernist to a postmodernist discipline” (Horrocks 2001: 19). The paper will also examine the Electra complex from Jung’s perspective. What is specific about Jung is that “he was strictly a phenomenologist, to that extent a postmodern before postmodernism” (David 2003: 24). The inner psyche of the characters will be further interpreted through a postmodern reading of masks. Like the civil war which divided the States into a Northern and a Southern part, the inner self of some Mannons is composed of masks that are the outcome of the inner split between repression and free will. On the other hand, the postmodern reading of the play will focus on Barthes’ announcement of The Death of The Author. Interdisciplinarity will ultimately be mapped out with relying on Linda Hutcheon’s postmodern reading of intertexuality.

Adaptiveness is one of the most significant features of the supply chain that affects the results of its functioning. The capability of the supply chain to adapt to all, more and more demanding conditions is one of the main factors that guarantee long-term competitiveness and success. R. Kalakota, M. Robinson and P. Gundepudi consider inventory visibility, fulfilment velocity and coordination versatility as three fundamental pillars of adaptive supply chains, also termed as 3V in the literature. The chief objective of this paper is the identification of features that a supply chain should have in order to be called adaptive, as well as the verification of their compliance with the 3V principle. The review of the available literature sources that focus on the subject of the major features of adaptive supply chains (in particular having a decisive effect on their adaptive capabilities) has resulted in certain common elements. The authors of all the described approaches emphasise the two features: visibility and velocity. The third, frequently indicated, feature is also versatility or variety (that can be treated as one of the elements of the versatility of the supply chain). Visibility involves ensuring access to the information for all participants in the supply chain, also customers. Velocity, in turn, refers to the reaction time of the supply chain to all sorts of events and the time of implementing necessary changes. The third element is versatility. It primarily involves balancing the operational capability of a supply chain with market requirements, in particular delivering suitable products and services of the required quality and in the ordered volume. It is also vital to adjust the offer to the individual needs of customers.

Versatility and creativity: Cases of martial arts masters

Problem. Within the context of the General Theory of Fighting Arts the problem was raised as to whether there is any correlation between the versatility coefficient A and the creativity index among martial arts masters. Their biographical notes were cited. Method. The cases of n=22 high ranking martial arts masters were analysed. They are both historical and contemporary figures. Their path to the championship was tested using the M-Q Scale and accepted indicators. Descriptive statistics (Chi 2 , V Cramer and C Pearson) were used. Results. Modification of the formula for the versatility coefficient (WB) was proposed. A moderately strong relationship was found between the ‘versatility’ and ‘creativity’ indicators. Conclusions. A wealth of knowledge and skills often translates into creating a new quality – the emergence of new varieties (schools, methods, styles) of martial arts.

Problem. Na gruncie Ogólnej Teorii Sztuk Walki podjęto problem, czy wśród mistrzów sztuk walki zachodzi korelacja pomiędzy współczynnikiem wszechstronności A and wskaźnikiem kreatywności. Metoda. Analizie poddano przypadki n=22 mistrzów sztuk walki wysokiej rangi. Są to postacie historyczne i współczesne. Ich drogę do mistrzostwa zbadano z użyciem Skali M-Q i przyjętych wskaźników Zastosowano statystykę opisową (Chi2, V_Cramera i C_Pearsona). Wyniki. Zaproponowano modyfikację wzoru na współczynnik wszechstronności (WB). Stwierdzono zależność umiarkowanie silną pomiędzy wskaźnikami zmiennych „wszechstronność” i „kreatywność”. Wnioski. Bogactwo wiedzy i umiejętności przekłada się często na tworzenie nowej jakości – powstawanie nowych odmian (szkół, metod, stylów) sztuk walki.

Автор проводит анализ проекта макроэтики взаимной ответствен-ности Карла-Отто Апеля – одного из создателей дискурса. Новое измерение этики основанной на дискурсе, по мнению Апеля, является необходимой реакцией на новые этические проблемы связанные с процессом глобализации. В центре находится проблема ответственности за последствия глобальных действий, которые накапливаются, например, в виде экологических проблем. Автор статьи ставит перед собой задание представить макроэтику Карла-Отто Апеля в контексте этики дискурса, из которой этот проект возникает и для которой он являет собой практическую экземплификацию.

The author undertakes the analysis of the project of makroethics of the common responsibility introduced by Karl-Otto Apel, the leading originator of the discourse ethics. According to his theory, this new dimension of the ethics based on the dis-course creates a necessary answer for new ethical problems arising from the pro-cess of globalization. The central problem here is the question of responsibility for the global actions, represented, among other things, by the ecological issues. The author aims at presenting the makroethics of Karl-Otto Apel in the context of the Discourse Ethics, from which the whole project springs, epitomizing also its practical exemplification.

The players who played in the Polish football league in the interwar period were very versatile and talented, therefore they were also successful in other sports. The aim of the study was to assess the scale of this phenomenon. The mass development of football in Poland meant that there was a shortage of talented players in the struggle involving sports games, athletics or winter sports. The high level of physical fitness of the players predisposed them to participate in the competitions in sections of sports clubs other than football. The author presents detailed lists of footballers, participants in league competitions in the years 1927–1939, who became medallists of Polish championships in ice hockey, athletics, basketball, volleyball and handball. In addition, the biographies and achievements of the most versatile athletes are included.

Zawodnicy występujący w latach międzywojennych w polskiej lidze piłkarskiej byli bardzo wszechstronni i utalentowani, dlatego odnosili sukcesy sportowe także w innych dyscyplinach sportu. Celem pracy była ocena skali tego zjawiska. Masowy rozwój piłki nożnej w Polsce sprawił, że brakowało utalentowanych zawodników w zmaganiach obejmujących gry sportowe, lekkoatletykę czy sporty zimowe. Wysoka sprawność piłkarzy predystynowała ich do udziału w rywalizacji sekcji klubów sportowych, innych niż futbolowe. Przedstawiono szczegółowe wykazy piłkarzy, uczestników rozgrywek ligowych w latach 1927–1939, którzy zostali medalistami mistrzostw Polski w hokeju na lodzie, lekkoatletyce, koszykówce, siatkówce i piłce ręcznej. Ponadto zaprezentowano sylwetki i dokonania najbardziej wszechstronnych zawodników.
