Straipsnyje aptariama šiuolaikinė miesto pagrindinių aikščių formavimo situacija Lietuvoje, išskiriant ir apibūdinant kelis svarbiausius bruožus. Čia analizuojama kintanti miesto viešųjų erdvių samprata ir jų pavyzdžiai, kintanti miesto viešųjų erdvių tipologija bei kintantys visuomenės reikalavimai aikšių ir paties miesto formavimui. Tekste išskiriamos ir aptariamos kai kurios aiškiau matomos aikščių formavimo tendencijos bei idėjos.

Towns reflect the societies that created them. As society transforms it influences certain changes in attitudes towards a city and its formation, traditions and principles applied to its development as well as public spaces and the meaning they convey. At present, most of the former main representative town squares in Lithuania face similar transformations. After their key elements - ideological monuments - have been removed, town squares still remain unformed. Their formation process still shows clear signs of stagnation. After reviewing the formation patterns of urban public spaces in 1990-2009, a few main trends could be distinguished: (1) Deconstruction and uncertainty, as upon change of the socio-cultural context and social ideology, the former main representative squares of towns still lack new solutions. (2) Substitution, where in place (or almost in place) of former monuments new ones are built without changing in essence the composition quality of a given public space. (3) The newest competitive solution proposals for former main representative town squares usually are of a high artistic quality by their spatial morphology and semiological text conveying both relevant and universal social values, avoiding excessive pomp and preaching.

Vilniaus identiteto tęstinumui bei tolimesniam kokybiško sostinės įvaizdžio formavimui didelę svarbą turi šiuo metu stichiškai besivystančio Neries dešiniojo kranto ir "architektūrinės kalvos" tolimesnės raidos urbanistiniai principai. Nereguliuojamos plėtros toleravimas darytų didžiausią neigiamą poveikį miesto identitetui, kraštovaizdžiui, kultūros paveldui, materialiam turtui ir šių veiksnių tarpusavio sąveikai. Todėl būtina nusistatyti aiškius metodinius moderniojo centro plėtros principus, kurie apibrėžtų vientisą urbanistinį centro įvaizdį, užtikrintų planuojamos teritorijos polifunkciškumą visuomeninių interesų atžvilgiu. Taptų aiškios investicinės erdvės galimybės, reglamentuotos sąlygos kultūriniam ir gamtiniam savitumui saugoti, ryškinti ir racionaliai naudoti, atsirastų objektyvios galimybės planuojamos teritorijos plėtrai valdyti ir svarbiausiems reglamentams nustatyti.

Urban development principles of the "urban hill" on the right bank of the Neris river, which now is developing rather chaotically, have major importance for further formation of Vilnius urban identity and for formation of qualitative image of the capital. Toleration of further unregulated development would have a huge negative influence on urban identity, landscape, cultural heritage, real estate, and on interaction of these subjects. Therefore, it is necessary to define clear development principles of the modern centre in order to describe its complete urbanistic image and secure multifunctionality for public needs. This will make the area clear for investment, create conditions for preservation, accentuation and rational use of cultural and natural heritage. It will create objective possibilities for development management and establishment of regulation principles for the analysed area.
