W artykule omówiono stan badań nad ruchem naturalnym Lubelszczyzny. Główny nacisk położono na wskazanie problemów związanych z wykorzystaniem rejestracji ciągłej. Prace nad inwentaryzacją ksiąg metrykalnych i wykorzystaniem ich zawartości do badań nad zaludnieniem historycznej ziemi lubelskiej trwają od lat 50. ubiegłego wieku. W zamierzeniu, efektem tych starań miała być publikacja liczb ruchu naturalnego, opatrzona krytycznym komentarzem oraz wyprowadzone na ich podstawie charakterystyki liczbowe populacji. Zamierzeń tych nie udało się jak do tej pory w całości zrealizować. Dotychczasowe wyniki wskazują na zaniedbania w rejestracji zgonów małych dzieci, różnej liczby zapisów dokonywanych przez duchownych w księgach formularza trydenckiego, austriackiego i polskiego, prowadzone niekiedy równolegle dla tego samego okresu. Niepokój budzi także możliwość odbywania przez wiernych praktyk religijnych poza przypisaną prawem parafią. Poważne ograniczenie w prowadzeniu kwerendy źródłowej stanowił do tej pory fakt, iż wszystkie księgi metrykalne z okresu staropolskiego oraz tzw. księgi austriackie przechowywane są w archiwach parafialnych. W latach 2012–2015 przeprowadzona została digitalizacja wszystkich zgromadzonych tam źródeł. Zasób ten udostępniany jest sukcesywnie na stronie http://ksiegimetrykalne.pl.

The article presents the state of research into vital events in the Lublin Region. The main attention has been paid to the problems concerning the continuous registration.The research into inventorying parish registers and analysing their contents with special emphasis placed on historical populating of the Lublin Region has been conducted for the last fifty years. The purpose of the research effort was to publish the numbers of the vital events with a commentary and to provide a quantitative description of the population. Yet, so far the purpose has not been fully achieved. The results so far obtained indicate that there were some inaccuracies in the registration of infant deaths and different numbers of records made by clergymen in parish registers in Tridentine, Austrian and Polish forms, which were sometimes written at the same time. Other inaccuracies result from the fact that some members of the congregation might have practised their religion in parishes other than their own ones. The preliminary research of sources is additionally restricted by the fact that all Old-Polish registers and the so called Austrian books are kept in parish archives. In the years 2012–2015 they were all digitalised, and they are successively made public at http://ksiegimetrykalne.pl.
