Contemporary Trends in Management Education versus Student Expectations

Modern universities are experiencing constant changes which are extremely meaningful nowadays. These changes reflect on the further directions of the management education development in a broad context. This paper presents the results of research on the condition of management education in the students’ perception. The methodology of this research was inspired by ethnography and based on anthropological interviews (12 conducted with first-year students and 13 with last-year students). They pointed out some university domains insufficiently supervised by the academic authorities both financially and mentally. The conclusions presented in the text are based on the expectations of students confronted with the current situation. They clearly indicate a gap in the educational system which is based mainly on the turnover of the traditional university values.

Zmiany zachodzące we współczesnych uczelniach skłaniają do refleksji nad dalszymi kierunkami rozwoju edukacji menedżerskiej w szerokim kontekście. Autorka prezentuje wyniki badań nad stanem edukacji menedżerskiej w opinii studentów. W badaniu inspirowanym metodami etnograficznymi wzięli udział studenci szkół zarządzania pierwszego roku studiów licencjackich i ostatniego roku studiów magisterskich. Wskazali obszary uczelni niedostatecznie doinwestowane przez władze akademickie zarówno finansowo, jak i mentalnie. Wnioski zaprezentowane w tekście oparto na konfrontacji oczekiwań studentów ze stanem faktycznym. Jednoznacznie wskazują one na lukę w systemie edukacyjnym, która bazuje głównie na zmianie tradycyjnych wartości uniwersyteckich.

Summary It is indicated in the lecture that higher education (universities) is one of the fundamental entities that change the image of cultural and civilizational life. Nowadays, its existence in Poland is based on the European Union projects, including rules of so called the Bologna process. Changes in the image and development of the Polish academicism that have been taking place, became subject of deep criticism made by scientific communities, as well as broad public opinion. In the process of these changes a clash between traditional values and information society creation was revealed. A particularly critical attitude towards the present development of academicism at the University is presented by representatives of humanities and social sciences.

Koncepcja działań pozornych Jana Lutyńskiego została wykorzystana w tym artykule jako perspektywa teoretyczna stanowiąca pewną propozycję odróżnienia komunikatów pozornych i autentycznych. Dodatkowo, autorka powołała się na schemat stworzony przez badaczy Krytycznej Analizy Dyskursu z kręgu Normana Fairclougha, dzięki któremu możliwa jest analiza języka działań pozornych. W głównej części artykułu znajduje się analiza dyskursu dwóch promocyjnoreklamowych informatorów odnoszących się do dwóch przykładowych instytucji systemu szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce. Jej rezultaty wskazują na bardziej ogólne w skali społecznej zjawisko konflacji porządku wartości akademickich i wartości komercyjnych, które z kolei wydaje się być konsekwencją zmian w systemie władzy, kontroli i ideologii, jakie zachodzą we współczesnych społeczeństwach.

Within this article, Jan Lutynski’s concept of apparent action serves as a theoretical frame for distinguishing apparent and authentic communication. Additionally, Norman Fairclough’s approach has been incorporated to permit the analysis of the language of apparent action. The discourse analysis of two higher education advertisements highlights the more general phenomenon of the conflation of academic and commercial values, which the author considers further as consequences of the changes in power, control and ideology of contemporary society.

The evolution in the sector set new tasks for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)*, where — in addition to educational activity — their cooperation with other entities is assumed, which will make it possible to take up contemporary challenges. One of these is University Social Responsibility (USR)*, the popularity of which is growing; however, this area is not sufficiently recognized in the relevant literature. This fact was an important premise for undertaking research to assess the current state of the higher education sector in the context of the implementation of the concept of social responsibility. The purpose of the paper is to show students' opinions on the implementation of USR by HEIs and their knowledge of SR. The author's intention is to present the results of her own research. The material obtained in the course of the survey showed that the symptoms of the adaptation of the concept of Social Responsibility (SR)* to HEI management were identified, but the degree of their involvement in this area is insufficient, as is the level of students' knowledge in the field of SR. The exploratory research referred to in this article is an introduction to a broader scope of research.

Ewolucja dokonana w sektorze wyznaczyła nowe zadania uczelniom, gdzie oprócz działalności kształceniowej, zakłada się ich współpracę z pozostałymi podmiotami, dzięki czemu możliwe ma stać się podejmowanie współczesnych wyzwań. Jednym z nich jest społeczna odpowiedzialność uczelni (USR), której popularność rośnie, jednak w literaturze przedmiotu obszar ten nie jest dostatecznie zdiagnozowany. Fakt ten stanowił istotną przesłankę do podjęcia wysiłków badawczych celem oceny aktualnego stanu sektora szkolnictwa wyższego w kontekście wdrażania i realizacji koncepcji społecznej odpowiedzialności. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie opinii studentów na temat wdrażania koncepcji USR oraz ich wiedzy w zakresie SR. Zamierzeniem Autorki jest przedstawienie wyników badań własnych. Uzyskany w toku ankietyzacji materiał pozwolił na diagnozę, w ramach której okazało się, iż identyfikowane są symptomy adaptacji koncepcji SR do zarządzania uczelniami, jednak poziom ich zaangażowania jest w tym obszarze niewystarczający, podobnie jak poziom wiedzy studentów w zakresie SR. Badanie eksploracyjne referowane w niniejszym artykule stanowi wstęp do badań o szerszym zakresie.

Ducha nauki tworzą takie wartości akademickie, jak bezstronność w myśleniu, reguły logiczne, tolerancja w sprawach naukowych. Śledząc trzy ścieżki etnograficzne – obserwując własne poczynienia badawcze, wskazuję, że o duchu nauki stanowi również tożsamość osoby badacza. Konsekwencją potraktowania tożsamości osoby na równi z wiedzą obiektywną jest zawieszenie bezwarunkowej obiektywności. Analiza własnych ścieżek badawczych stanowi narzędzie służące do ograniczenia niedoskonałości związanych z terenem badawczym i budowania warunkowej obiektywności. Po drugie, ścieżki etnograficzne stanowią ilustrację szczegółowych problemów (analizy setek zdjęć zarchiwizowanych w bazie internetowej projektu badawczego Niewidzialne Miasto; interpretacji subiektywnych przeżyć widzów festiwalu teatralno-muzycznego oraz doświadczenia badacza jednocześnie jako tubylca, jak i obcego), z którymi musiałem się zmierzyć w trakcie badań.

Such academic values as impartiality of thinking, logical rules, tolerance in scientific matters define the spirit of science. Following the ethnographer’s path and looking at my own research, I point out that a person’s identity is an important part of this spirit. The consequence of treating the identity of a person equally with the objective knowledge is the suspension of unconditional objectivity. In addition, the ethnographer’s path is a tool for reducing the imperfection associated with the field of study, as well as for building conditional objectivity. Secondly, the ethnographer’s path facilitates illustrating particular problems I had to face during my research (e.g., analyses of hundreds of photographs archived in the database of the research project Invisible City; interpretation of subjective experiences of spectators of the Malta Festival Poznan, as well as their participation in culture, and interpretation of experiences of the researcher – both as a native and as a stranger).
