Nowoczesny świat stał się domeną procesu racjonalizacji życia. Medycynie przypadła w nim rola instrumentu racjonalizacji ochrony zdrowia. Proces ten stymulował postęp cywilizacyjny. Jednocześnie cechowała go ambiwalencja w sferze kultury. Podnoszeniu poziomu dobrostanu i zdrowia towarzyszył proces medykalizacji życia.

The aim of the paper is to explain social knowledge creation in terms of the Complex Responsive Processes (CRP) theory. As a methodological framework of his analysis, the author gives a detailed description of the CRP approach, presents the phenomena of learning and knowledge creation in an organizational context, and considers the social level of knowledge. He discusses contributions by J. Hausner, J. Górniak, S. Mazur, and A. Giza, who embed the problem of knowledge in the social context that is covered in the current issue of the journal. In his conclusion, the author assesses the interpretation of social knowledge on the basis of the CRP assumptions and offers some thoughts on the end limits and future directions of this approach.
The text is based on research carried out among schoolchildren of third class of primary school. It shows a way of thinking about the world typical of children and constructing their social knowledge. The text was produced as a result of series of meetings with schoolchildren of 1–3 classes and the struggle to find answers to their questions of social, existential, ethical and moral nature. It reflects childlike concepts of social knowledge. It is based on quality tests results conveyed with the usage of dialogue method. In the theoretical part there are assumptions of interpretive paradigm and theses about social interactionist theory, linguistic relativism and social and psychological constructivism as a background for the discussion. The concept of the research includes the characteristics and justification for the application of the dialogue method and in addition to that, it gives insight into the results of the research which is the reconstruction of the image of the world typical of children and reconstruction of the meanings given to social ideas by children during their conversations with adults. The research part includes the image of the world constructed by children with excerpts from their utterances, from their ways of understanding the world, their perception of their environment. It is divided into parts entitled: ‘Children search’, ‘Children think’, ‘Children speak’, ‘Children construct’. Each part is packed with children’s hot knowledge, their experience and their ways of understanding the world.

The paper discusses the problem of knowledge in terms of determinants of human cognition. The main objective is to determine the designatum of the concept of social knowledge and the methods of its categorization. The author presents the key issues concerning knowledge and cognition, both individual and collective. He discusses the dilemmas arising from the nature of human knowledge and ultimately impinging on the nature and shape of social knowledge. He concludes that social knowledge is relative to human knowledge, and that every kind of knowledge, including scientific, develops in close connection with its social environment.

The paper offers a predominantly historical review of paradigms in language research, and attempts to anchor them in modular thinking about social knowledge formation, especially formation of the language of social communication. The reflexion on language, constitutive of linguistic research since the beginning of its existence, has not only impacted language structures and designates but also provided them with some normative functions. The significance of linguistics is all the more apparent if we realize that all knowledge is created, communicated and preserved in a language whose different linguistic aspects we can analyze. The author describes scientific paradigms based on the theory of scientific revolutions developed by Thomas Kuhn. In the course of history of linguistics, there were four such paradigms: traditional (inductivism), structural (verificationism), one derived from generative grammar (falsificationism), and a cognitive one. The development of language research enables us to perceive its strong tendency to encroach on other domains, especially those of social sciences. Nowadays, there are elements of many paradigms in linguistics. Such complexity makes it difficult to define a single paradigm which, according to the Kuhn, is able to determine its functions and tasks. However, it does not undermine the significance of language as a fundamental factor in social knowledge creation, which is a tool of its communication and preservation. Indeed, it makes language research all the more important.

The paper presents the theoretical approach to the research of social life based on transcendental realism and methodological individualism (accepting the existence of structured social entities), recognizing the high complexity of social life and its evolutionary character. This positio n is formulated in opposition to constructivism and holism. The mode of constructing social theories is inspired by a reinterpretation of Alfred Schütz’s approach that focuses on the features of Schütz’s concept which bring him closer to the rational choice theory than to interpretative postmodernism, even though he is often considered as the proponent of the latter. The ideas presented in the paper are close to those developed in the scope of analytical sociology, especially to its emphasis on causal research of social mechanisms and micro-macro relationships.

The paper recapitulates the discussion pursued at the Krakow Circle seminars, prompted by the first paper in this volume. The author engages in a dialogue with the authors of other papers published herein and develops his initial argumentation. At the same time, he indicates his preferred direction of subsequent debates within the Krakow Circle.
