The article presents Wilhelm His Sr.’s (1831–1904) methodological path of research in the field of neurophysiological foundations, explained through specific mechanical causes. In this research context, the scholar searched for the so-called fixed cause-and-effect principle, which refers to the targeted development of the nervous system. His’s pioneering research mainly focused on the structural genesis of the nervous system and the growth and development of embryonic neural cells.
This paper discusses selected aspects of the relationship between concepts developed in natural philosophy and in esoteric traditions. For this purpose, I refer to the views of Antoine Faivre, who enumerates the following topoi of esotericism: correspondence, vitalism, imagination and mediation, as well as the practice of transmutation, concordance and transmission. The analysis of the history of culture shows that the image of nature created in natural philosophy was linked to that adopted by alchemists, magicians and astrologers. I analyze the relation between alchemy and philosophy of nature, as well as the presence of esoteric topoi of correspondence and vitalism in the philosophy of nature.

W artykule przedyskutuję wybrane aspekty relacji zachodzących pomiędzy koncepcjami powstałymi w filozofii przyrody a tradycjami ezoterycznymi.

The article analyzes Henri Bergson’s understanding of human life in the light of his metaphor of life as “insinuation.” Comparing his ideas with the ideas of another original thinker of the age, George Santayana, allows shedding light on Bergson’s ontological strategy of making matter– as a threat to life –subject to mediation. Memory and imagination use matter to play out the past in the guise of the present–for the sake of life. The text also focuses on the formulas of freedom arising out of both thinkers’ conceptions of conscious life – that of Bergson, for whom the horizon and the fulfillment can be found in the beginning, or the primary vital impulse, and that of Santayana, who sees fulfillment in the forms of finitude assumed by each particular life. Looking at humanity in terms of a spiritual challenge links both conceptions. The whole discussion responds to the need to return to such fundamental but sidestepped terms as “humanity” and “spirituality”.

This essay constitutes an attempt to criticize the so-called anti-systemic critique from the positions which strongly affirm modernity as an epoch based on the primacy of life over thinking. By referring to the ideas of Marshall Bermann which he called “Marxist Vitalism”, this essay emphasizes a unique and innovative role of the concept of life in modernity as opposed to any apriorical and preestablished intellectual project. The seemingly astonishing harmony between the Left and Right variants of “anti-modernism” consists precisely in the fact that all those thinkers who criticize modernity are most of all thinkers who naturally assume the old, premodern, essentially Platonic primacy of thinking over life. In its constructive part, the essay presents the modern idea of a “promised life” which it links to political messianism; it expresses an optimistic belief that it can become a new inspiration for the thinkers to come who will accept the specificity of modernitas and learn how to be loyal to its premises.
Essay writing by Bolesław Leśmian, a graduate of law, draws attention not only to the presence of the philosophical or sociological context but also the legal one while his poetry seems to be completely detached from legal practice. The issue of legal protection of values represented by life is depicted in the interpretation of two dissimilar poetic works, namely the ballad Asoka from the volume Łąka (The Meadow) and the poem starting with the words “Przez śnieżycę, co wyjąc powiększa przestworza” from Dziejba leśna (Forest Happenings). Aśoka, a monarch and lawmaker in ancient India, guaranteed it in his addresses. It paths the way to the spiritual for the hero of many legends. In the 20th century the value of human life is guarded by “a representative of law”, uniformed police officer whose very presence in the street prevents robbery. In both cases life is treated by Leśmian as the highest value motivated metaphysically, which opens the way for further reflections concerning the grandeur of law as understood by the poet as well as to the question whether the issue of connections between literature and law, already known from the research into the literary output of Franz Kafka, may help understand Bolesław Leśmian’s outlook on life.

W zaproponowanej w artykule interpretacji dwóch niepodobnych utworów poetyckich, ballady Asoka z tomu Łąka i wiersza o incipicie „Przez śnieżycę, co wyjąc powiększa przestworza” z tomu Dziejba leśna, ukazana zostaje kwestia prawnej ochrony wartości, jaką stanowi życie. Władca i prawodawca starożytnych Indii, Aśoka, zagwarantował ją w swoich orędziach.

Scripted documentaries are a specific kind of television productions: they are low budget television series resembling documentaries, usually starring amateur actors, who are playing allegedly real characters, and the portrayed events are real life stories. They are gaining wide appreciation, especially among television producers, due to their low costs of production. The most popular theme of these stories are problems connected with family life. The content of these stories is filled with internal contradictions and it is actually a homage to the human vitality and its justification.

During the 17th and 18th centuries natural sciences were undergoing a mathematization. This process consisted, among other, in a quantitative approach to objects being researched; in delivering mathematical definitions for fundamental concepts and in shaping mathematical structures of natural sciences. The mathematization understood as a process was depended on some philosophical ideas already present in sciences, what might or might not start up the process of mathematization. Specificity of biological sciences rested on the fact they were being established by philosophical ideas, such as aristotelianism, vitalism, organicism or mechanicism, which referred to the notion of soul, will, experience.
W artykule przedstawiono życiorys wybitnego polskiego fizjologa Napoleona Cybulskiego (1854 - 1919).

The article presents the biography of the outstanding Polish physiologist Napoleon Cybulski (1854-1919). Then, his contribution to the development of Polish and world medicine, inventions, and his literary output, especially in the field of physiology, were described. His views on the role and importance of science in social life were also presented, as well as his attitude to the methodological concepts of German scientist in the field of medical sciences and natural sciences, especially R. Virchov’s mechanicism and H. Driesch’s vitalism. As Cybulski was also interested in social and political problems, in particular the attitude of the state to financing scientific research and the issue of admitting women to medical professions, an analysis of this scientist’s views on this subject was also undertaken. In addition, Cybulski’s attitude towards the use food produced by the scientists in laboratory conditions (which in his opinion is to replace natural products in nutrition in future) as well as his opinion on mediumism and hypnosis were discussed.

The novel entitled Novendialia (2008) by a Ukrainian authoress Maryna Sokolian (1979) with elements of a detective story and urban horror tells about fights between life energy kidnappers and its defenders employed by the Night Town Hall. In the text religious and psychologic aspects of various allusions are considered as well as authoress’ implications of fictitious mythicalmagical system from the point of view of religion, philosophy, psychology (especially psychoanalysis). The price of life and death proves that the writer fits in the type of a novel on selffulfilment, sacrifice and passions.
