Volunteering is an essential part of contemporary state and civic society. Through volunteering citizens significantly contribute to the social and economic development of their local communities. They expand the influence and the capacity of civil society organisations and at the same time they have the opportunity to develop their own skills. Volunteering teaches the principles of responsibilities, social solidarity, generosity and subsidiarity. It also builds social capital and creates interpersonal ties, based on cooperation. Through this it becomes the way of development of the democracy and civil society.

Cezurą czasową w rozwoju i funkcjonowaniu wolontariatu w Polsce jest moment uch-walenia Ustawy z 24 kwietnia 2003 roku o działalności pożytku publicznego i o wolontariacie (Dz.U. 2003 Nr 96, poz. 873 z póź. zm.), kiedy to z aktywności nieformalnej wolontariat stał się działalnością formalną prawnie uregulowaną. Przyjęta w ustawie definicja wolontariusza budziła wśród ekspertów wątpliwości, które przepisy – prawa pracy czy prawa cywilnego – mają zastosowanie do podejmowanej dobrowolnie aktywności, dlatego przy okazji innych prac prowadzonych nad ustawą pojawiła się konieczność jej doprecyzowania.

Turning point in the functioning of volunteering in Poland is the moment of enactment of the Act of 24 April 2003 on public benefit activity and volunteerism (OJ 2003 No. 96, pos. 873 with subsequent/further amendments.), when volunteering from informal activity has become a formal legally regulated activity. Accepted definition of a volunteer in the law raised concerns among experts which rules – labor or civil law – should be applied to activity undertaken voluntarily. Hence it was necessary to clarify it.

Wolontariat, filantropia i altruizm to pojęcia na tyle do siebie podobne, że często są zupełnie są ze sobą mylone. Pojęcia te, choć są różne, to jednak wzajemnie na siebie oddziałują i się przenikają, tworząc tym samym filary działalności prospołecznej. Wolontariat rozumiany jako dobrowolne, nieodpłatne i świadome działanie na rzecz innych osób lub społeczności, stanowi jedną z najbardziej szlachetnych postaw człowieka. Celem niniejszej pracy jest określenie zainteresowania studentów działaniami na rzecz społeczności lokalnej, jak również ustalenie istoty i roli wolontariatu w życiu młodzieży akademickiej.

Volunteering, philanthropy and altruism as concepts are so much alike that they are often confused. Although these concepts are different, they interact with each other and interpenetrate, creating the pillars of pro-social activities. Volunteering, understood as a voluntary, unpaid and conscious action for other people or the community, is one of the most noble human behaviors. The aim of this paper is to determine the extent of students’ involvement in pro-social projects, as well as to define the nature and role of volunteering in the lives of young people.

The following article focuses on the role of social activity with particular emphasis on the voluntary work of the elderly as an important aspect of education in old age. Volunteering allows an elderly person to properly adapt to the old age and to understand the changes taking place. It also contributes to improving the quality of life in its declining phase. The purpose of the article is to describe the importance of voluntary activities in old age.

W prezentowanym artykule skoncentrowano się na ukazaniu roli aktywności społecznej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wolontariatu senioralnego w aspekcie wychowania w pespektywie starości. Wolontariat pozwala osobie starszej na prawidłową adaptację do starości, zrozumienie zachodzących zmian, a także przyczynia się do podnoszenia jakości życia w schyłkowej fazie życia. Celem artykułu jest opis i ukazanie znaczenia działań wolontarytycznych w starości.
