The article discusses two works devoted to the women's education and upbringing, written in two different eras. Both books – the treaty by a Spanish secular humanist Juan Luis Vives (1492–1540) De institutione feminae christianae (Bruges 1524) dedicated to the Queen of England, Catherine of Aragon, wife of Henry VIII, and her daughter Mary Tudor, and reference guide for women by a Spanish Jesuit Jorge Loring (1921–2013) Para salvarte. Compendio de las verdades fundamentales de la religión católica y normas para vivirlas (1st ed. 1952) – are advisory in nature. Both authors in a similar way define the role of women in a society. Formulating the recommendations for good Christian women, the authors resort to almost identical argumentation derived from the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers. They use similar rhetorical devices which are tailored to the current circumstances. Both authors refer to the same authority and show the same examples. The analysis of both works aims to show the immutability of rhetorical practices in the field of advice literature devoted to women.
This article discusses the results of the HyPaTia research project in the feminist history of the theatre, situating it in the wider context of the phenomenon of women’s history, as practiced since the 1970s. The author investigates the revisionist character of the project’s dialogue with the canon and the constructive gesture of (re)creation of a women’s history of Polish theatre. Through the figures of “Shakespeare’s sister” and “Hypatia’s sisters”, attention is drawn to the specific entanglement of the life and work of female playwrights in a patriarchal framework (referred to as the “republic of brothers”), problematizing the understanding of women’s empowerment as liberation from male oppression or escape into the margins.
The paper is devoted to the research on the nineteenth-century women’s diaries, memoirs, and epistolography, carried out in the years 2013– 2017 as part of the international project of the National Program for the Development of Humanities: “Memoirs and letters of Polish authors from the Western Krai (Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine) in the years 1795–1918”. It discusses the status and role of the nineteenth-century women’s egodocuments in contemporary humanities. The study refers to the importance of autobiographical reflection and cultural perspective, and the major point of reference are selected examples of collections of manuscript letters, memoirs, and diaries of Polish women authors from the so-called Taken Lands1 (Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine) in the nineteenth century, and those women who were associated with these areas only for a period of time, as well as those who only wrote about the Taken Lands. This article focuses primarily on the collections of manuscripts in Lithuanian and Ukrainian archives and libraries (Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius, Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius, Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kiev, Vernadsky National Library, Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv, V. Stefanyk National Scientific Library).

Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce badań nad dziewiętnastowieczną literaturą pamiętnikarską oraz epistolografią kobiecą, jakie w latach 2013–2017 prowadzone były w ramach międzynarodowego projektu Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki: „Pamiętniki i listy polskich autorów z Ziem Zabranych (Litwa, Białoruś, Ukraina) 1795–1918”. Dyskusji poddano status i miejsce dziewiętnastowiecznych kobiecych egodokumentów we współczesnej humanistyce. W niniejszym artykule uwagę skoncentrowano przede wszystkim na zbiorach rękopiśmiennych litewskich i ukraińskich archiwów i bibliotek (Biblioteka Litewskiej Akademii Nauk im. Wróblewskich w Wilnie, Litewskie Państwowe Archiwum Historyczne w Wilnie, Centralne Państwowe Archiwum Historyczne Ukrainy w Kijowie, Biblioteka Narodowa im. W. Wernadskiego, Centralne Państwowe Archiwum Historyczne Ukrainy we Lwowie, Biblioteka Naukowa im. W. Stefanyka).
This paper presents three autobiographical accounts by Etla (Edwarda) Bomsztyk (1899–1973), a Jewish house maid. Two of these unique testimonies (one published in Yiddish in 1959, the other recorded in Polish in 1966) focus on Bomsztyk’s political activity. This activity encompasses organizing domestic servants into unions in Warsaw in the 1920s, membership in the Bund and the Communist Party of Poland, and political imprisonment. The third account, written in Polish in 1953 and never before published, sits outside any institutional context. This consists in a personal narration on childhood in a small-town Jewish family, migration to Warsaw, poverty and suffering, first readings, loneliness and revolt. The aim of this paper is to reveal the tension that exists between these three texts. That is, between two accounts of political militancy on the one hand, and with early experiences that, though a prerequisite for Bomsztyk’s later political engagement, nevertheless could not be fully articulated within communist party discourse.

Trzyczęściowe wspomnienia Etli (Edwardy) Bomsztyk (1899–1973) są świadectwem o szczególnym znaczeniu, zapisem losu kobiety, Żydówki, służącej. Dwie części – jedna opublikowana w języku żydowskim w 1959 roku, druga nagrana w języku polskim w roku 1966 i przechowywana w Archiwum Akt Nowych – dotyczą działalności politycznej autorki: organizatorki związków zawodowych pomocy domowych w Warszawie w okresie międzywojennym, członkini Bundu i KPP, wreszcie – więźniarki politycznej.
The article discusses the activities of the female veteran’s movement in the Second Polish Republic. Organizational problems associated with the activities of the movement are analyzed, with particular emphasis being placed on internal ideological disputes that existed within the movement, which intensified after 1926. Issues surrounding Polish representation on the international stage are also analyzed. One of the most important aspects concerning the organization and functioning of the female veterans’ movement was the establishment in 1925 of the Fédération Interallié des Ancies Combatttants Auxiliaire (FIDAC Aux.). Poland was initially represented at FIDAC Aux. by organizations associated with the political movement Endecja. Th is situation changed in the early 1930s, aft er the Piłsudski camp gained control of the veteran’s movement. Between 1932–1933, the Polish female representation in FIDAC Aux. was restructured to include organizations associated with the Polish Legions that fought during World War I, with Aleksandra Piłsudska and General Roman Górecki playing a key role in these transformations.

W latach 1932–1933 nastąpiła reorganizacja polskiej żeńskiej organizacji FIDAC Aux., która przyjęła w swoje szeregi organizacje związane w czasie I wojny światowej z Legionami Polskimi. Kluczową rolę w tych przemianach odegrali gen. Roman Górecki oraz Aleksandra Piłsudska.
This article analyses the rules of including female theatre managers in theatre history. A speculative biographical profile of Wanda Wróblewska, the founder and manager of Teatr Ziemi Mazowieckiej [Masovian Land Theatre], serves here as a tool for revealing and problematizing the expectations towards female narratives that are intended as an alternative to the patriarchal model dominant in historiography. Like most travelling theatres, Teatr Ziemi Mazowieckiej was run by women – a fact that invites a feminist perspective into the discussion of the theatre’s history. It can be easily inscribed in an alternative historiographic model that emphasizes building relations with the audience and thetheatre’s social activity, while refraining from singling out masterpieces or constructing artistic hierarchies. Wróblewska’s speculative biography is also a catalyst for the question about the possibility of going beyond the narrative, which always becomes a form of power discourse.

The author focuses on analysing socio-political characteristics and trends in the parliamentary activity of female MPs serving in the Polish People’s Republic Sejm of the second mandate (1957–1961). On the one hand, her research aims at characterising those MPs taking into account such criteria as age, education, profession, political orientation as well as membership in political groups and circles. The other aspect of the research concerns the areas of their activity in selected parliamentary committees, the parliamentary questions they submitted and the subjects raised by them in parliamentary speeches. The author seeks, if only partially, to fill the gap in most recent studies of women’s history in the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PPR). In terms of methodology, critical content analysis is used. The source base is press bulletins, stenographic transcripts of Sejm sittings and archive documents.
The paper presents the origins and activities of Women’s Courier and Intelligence Unit commanded by Aleksandra Szczerbińska. She became a Head of this Unit after it was retreated from Kielce together with troops of the 1st Brigade on 30th October 1914. This Unit was earlier commanded by Kazimierz Sawicki and was firstly a part of Intelligence Unit in the 1st Infantry Regiment, then in the 1st Brigade. The Unit consisted of 46 women, previous members of Shooting Troops, having few years of military experience. Some of them were also active members of independent political organizations. Bravery and skills of the members of Women’s Courier and Intelligence Unit were strongly appreciated by Józef Piłsudski.

The article is devoted to the unique in terms of form and content archive of the post-war Krakow Provincial Board of the League of Women, which is a collection of documents of various nature and origin, preserved in the legacy of Janina Jasicka in the National Archives in Krakow. This heterogeneous collection has been called the “mediated archive” because it is a contradiction to the traditional, structured institutional archive, and its shape is the result of the deliberate choices of the intermediary, i.e. the chronicler of the Management. The randomness of the preserved materials means that the collections include, for example, unique photographs that are absent from other archives, or, for example, notes about individual activists, probably made only for private use.
The paper aims at (1) presenting several difficulties that may be encountered in the process of translation of a popular-science text about history, and (2) giving reasons why this kind of a text is worth to pay attention to. I assume that the translation may serve an educational purpose as an example text used in teaching future translators and developing their translation skills. The translated version of the text into Polish may be a source of information in the field of social history, and more precisely in the field of research in the history of women in Victorian era. The author of the article on ideals of womanhood in the Victorian Britain is Lynn Abrams – a historian at the University of Glasgow. The article was published in 2001 on the BBC website that deals with popularizing the history of Great Britain. I intend to disseminate this text in popular-science magazine that deals with social history or gender history as a source of knowledge about social, cultural and political living conditions of women in Victorian era.

So far the research on the “woman question” under the Prussian partition has been dominated by the national paradigm. Through it Polish women were presented as female guardians of the national identity who were not interested in the battle for women’s rights. On the other hand, there has been no research on the engagement of German women and information about it was limited to their commitment to nationalism. Therefore an image emerged in which those women were depicted as coming from two neighbouring but hostile nationalities and societies. However, the most recent research revealed that some cases of cooperation existed. In order to analyse them, however, we need to use another analytical perspective: abandon the paradigm of conflict and instead take the opportunities brought about by the transnational turn in historical research. Transnational history deals with everything that floats and meets beyond the borders of states and societies, and that also includes the concepts that mobilised women to get involved. Therefore it allows to discover common ground for Polish and German women under the Prussian partition that might have laid foundations for a community of shared values to address the “woman question”.
The subject of this article is concerned with the characteristics of the social activity of Antonina Machczyńska (1832[37]–1919), a Lviv social and educational activist, for women’s equal rights at the turn of the19th and 20th centuries. Machczyńska’s memoirs from 1860–1919, stored in the Warsaw and Lviv collections, as well as her journalistic and historical works were analyzed. Particular attention was focused on the analysis of the well-known historical sketch written by her for the Women’s Work Exhibition in Prague in 1912, entitled: “Polish Woman”, which she devoted entirely to discussing the history of Polish women from the earliest times to the present. Referring to the emancipatory aspirations of Polish women and her own life experiences, Machczyńska presented a specific image of 19th century women, focused on the motif of Klaudines – women active in the Klaudyna (née Działyńska) Potocka Society.

Język milicyjnych opracowań okazuje się z jednej strony konserwatywny i zakorzeniony w tradycyjnych ramach postrzegania kobiecej seksualności, z drugiej strony jednak można analizować zmianę stosunku do problemu prostytucji wraz z kształtowaniem się dyskursu eksperckiego i profesjonalizacją działań milicyjnych sekcji ds. walki z nierządem. A problem that was supposed to disappear. The language of the Civic Militia documents concerning prostitution (1956–1969)History of prostitution is both a fascinating and a controversial topic. Yet, it still has not been thoroughly researched by historians, especially when it comes to the postwar history of Poland. The purpose of his article is to deepen our understanding of prostitution in the postwar Poland. To achieve that the author has analysed the language used by the Civic Militia (Polish: Milicja Obywatelska) to describe this phenomenon in the 1960s. Both the methods of historical source analysis and historical sociology are used to accomplish that. The sources include written orders, reports and notes produced by the Civic Militia officers and stored in the Police archives. Furthermore, the professional journals such as the Służba MO have been carefully researched to observe the development of a specific expert discourse on prostitution. The language of these texts turns out to be deeply rooted in the traditional vision of female sexuality. On the other hand, the sources show a visible change in the Civic Militia’s attitude towards prostitution and the professionalisation of its operations.
Research into the place of women in history, feminism and gender is conducted in many countries of the world, now has a wide reach and is already characterized by an avalanche of literature. The article discusses the achievements of research on the history of women on Polish lands in the early modern period, in the second decade of the 21st century. It reviews several groups of source publications devoted to women in the 16th–18th century (memoirs, diaries and travel journals, correspondence, wills), which always affect the intensity of historical research. The review of monographic achievements of women’s historiography of the last decade is presented in three conventional, extensive theme blocks: women in the family and beyond it (body, sexuality, love and emotions as well as intra-family relations); their education and knowledge, work in towns and in the country, as well as conflicts with law; and the third: women’s participation in politics, culture and religion. The work suggests the further development of women studies in terms of the number of studies and the research problems. It also draws attention to the need for new research methods in the historian’s workshop, such as social network analysis (SNA), proposed by sociologists, and successfully applied already in Western historical science. The author signalizes certain gaps in research in the history of women in the old-Polish period, which are also quite numerous for the next two centuries, and suggests an urgent need for writing a research-based synthesis of the history of women in Polish lands.

In Belarusian historiography, the history of women as an independent research direction appears only in the middle 1990-ies. Since that time, some scientific conferences have been held and some special editions dedicated to the history of women in Belarus. It should be noted that the researchers are not interested in the women’s history by itself – there are very few publications on it. The history of women’s participation in public life of the Byelorussian SSR can be divided into three periods: interwar, the Second World War and after the Second World War. The foundation of the women’s councils and the congresses of delegates and their activity in the interwar period are better described. The authors note that the Belarusian authorities expected that the activity of these institutions would lead to the changes in the social position of women increasing their role in public life. The women’s participation in other social organizations and social movements in the Byelorussian SSR are shallowly studied as well as their participation in the Belarusian collaborating organizations during the Second World War.

The article contains an analysis of the nature of the parliamentary debate concerning equal rights of men and women – including protection of children’s rights – that took place at the Polish Legislative Sejm in the period from 1947 to 1952. The discussion offered here applies the method of critical analysis of the content of available source material as well as the biographical method seeking to answer the questions who were the female MPs fighting for women’s rights in the period of Stalinism and whether their activity proved their agency. The source basis is transcripts of Sejm sittings, the press and literary memoirs. Female MPs such as M. Jaszczukowa, E. Pragierowa, I. Sztachelska, S. Garncarczyk and Z. Tomczyk were seeking to amend legislation so as to ensure the practical implementation of the gender equality principle. That was also a flagship slogan of the new communist people’s authorities at the start of the period known in historiography as Poland’s Stalinisation. Standards and regulations were debated that were to constitute a legal environment, and thus to make it possible for women to be active in various fields on an equal footing with men. The discord between postulates justified by ideology and cultural norms did not stop legislative amendments. The female MPs initiating that change could have felt the sense of agency and their actions certainly contributed to other changes towards gender equality in Poland of that time.

Intencją posłanek, m.in.
