ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to conduct a quantitative assessment of the risk related to occupational exposure to wood dust and the occurrence of sinonasal epithelial cancer (SNEC) by histotype, depending on the duration of exposure, using mathematical models.Material and MethodsThe relationship between the occurrence of SNEC by histotype (adenocarcinoma [AR] and tumors of other histotypes) and exposure to wood dust has been studied using the values of the odds ratios for individual periods of employment involving exposure to wood dust, and their 95% confidence intervals. The dose-response curves were constructed (more precisely, the duration of exposure-response curves). The author attempted to match the linear, quadratic or exponential models.ResultsIn all SNEC cases, there is a relationship between the duration of occupational exposure to wood dust and the relative risk of developing cancer. The estimated relative risk of developing AR after 35 years of exposure to wood dust is about 300, and the estimated risk of developing SNEC is 50, compared to non-exposed people for whom the relative risk is equal to 1. However, the relative risk of developing other types of cancer is <20, also in comparison with non-exposed people.ConclusionsThe author has identified a relationship between the duration of occupational exposure to wood dust and the relative risk of developing cancer in all SNEC cases.
Wstęp: Mikroskopijne grzyby stanowią biologiczny czynnik ryzyka zawodowego w środowisku pracy przemysłu drzewnego. W badaniu w celu określenia ich stężenia i składu gatunkowego w pyle wykorzystano metodę mikrobiologiczną i chemiczną. Materiał i metody: Próbki pyłu pobierano w 3 wybranych zakładach produkujących meble z różnych materiałów. Pierwsza fabryka (A) przetwarzała lite drewno, druga (B) – płyty wiórowe, a trzecia (C) wykorzystywała do produkcji mebli zarówno drewno, jak i tworzywa drzewne. Próbki pobierano z 12 różnych stanowisk roboczych i innych miejsc w każdym z zakładów. Średnia wartość ERG wynosiła 1,25 mg/kg w zakładach A i C oraz 1,15 mg/kg w fabryce B. Grzybami najczęściej izolowanymi w fabrykach A i B były grzyby z rodzaju Penicillum i Aspergillus. Background: Microscopic fungi are the biological agent of occupational risk in the woodworking environment. Microbiological and chemical methods were used for determination of their concentration and species composition in dust. Material and Methods: Dust was sampled in 3 factories producing furniture using different materials. The 1st factory (A) processes solid wood, the 2nd (B) – chipboards and the 3rd factory (C) uses both wood and wood composites. The samples were collected in 12 different workstations and locations in each factory. The quantitative content of fungal biomass was determined basing on analysis of ergosterol (ERG). The species composition of fungi was analyzed using the microbiological method basing on culture morphology. Results: The concentration of ergosterol was relatively low and ranged from 0.012 mg/kg to 3.36 mg/kg. The average value of ERG amounted to 1.25 mg/kg in factories A and C and 1.15 mg/kg in factory B. The most frequently isolated fungi in factory A and B were Penicillum and Aspergillus. However, in the factory C, only Trichoderma was isolated. The maximum concentration of fungi in dust collected in factory B was 2377 cfu/g and it is 3 times more than in the dust from factories A and C. Conclusions: Workers of furniture factories may be exposed to airborne fungi associated with the wood dust posing health hazard. The content of these fungi is relatively small (ERG – max: 3.36 mg/kg) but the species, especially genera Penicillum and Aspergillus, found in the dust which were reported as having allergic and toxic properties.

In wood-processing industry important position belongs to the wood dusts. They can be evalu-ated according hazardous properties, physical and chemical, of two ways. The first is characterized as a fire-technical properties and the second way includes the health aspects. Although each of which represents a particular sphere of interest, a common feature in such works is to ensure a working environment that meets the requirements of public health and technical safety.
Background Occupational exposure to wood dust can be responsible for many different harmful health effects, especially in workers employed in the wood industry. The assessment of wood dust adverse effects to humans, as well as the interpretation of its concentration measurements carried out to assess potential occupational exposure are very difficult. First of all, it is due to possible occurrence of different kind of wood dust in the workplace air, namely wood dust from dozens of species of trees belonging to 2 kinds of botanical gymnosperms and angiosperms, as well as to its different chemical composition. Material and Methods Total dust and respirable wood dust in the workplace air in the furniture industry was determined using the filtration-gravimetric method in accordance with Polish Standards PN-Z-04030-05:1991 and PN-Z-04030-06:1991. Air samples were collected based on the principles of individual dosimetry. Results Total dust concentrations were 0.84–13.92 mg/m3 and inhalable fraction concentrations, obtained after the conversion of total dust by applying a conversion factor of 1.59, were 1.34–22.13 mg/m3. Respirable fraction concentrations were 0.38–4.04 mg/m3, which makes approx. 25% of the inhalable fraction on average. The highest concentrations occurred in grinding and the lowest during milling processes of materials used in the manufacture of furniture. Conclusions The results indicate that the share of respirable fraction in the inhalable fraction of wood dust is considerable. Due to the determination of the threshold limit value (TLV) for the inhalable fraction of wood dust, it is necessary to replace the previously used samplers for total dust with samplers that provide quantitative separation of wood dust inhalable fractions in accordance with the convention of this fraction as defined in PN-EN 481:1998. Materiał i metody Pył całkowity i frakcję respirabilną na stanowiskach pracy w zakładach przemysłu meblowego oznaczano metodą filtracyjno-wagową, zgodnie z normami PN-Z-04030-05:1991 i PN-Z-04030-06:1991. Próbki powietrza do badań pobierano, stosując zasady dozymetrii indywidualnej.
