Józefowski considers interdisciplinary studies of creative workshop as art form. He describes the structure of his original workshop and discusses the role of imagination and image. Józefowski considers workshop as an art form dating back to the premises of the avant-garde (Here the term ‘avant-garde’ is broadly used to denote innovative artistic activity) and contained in the current of its post-avant-garde manifestations. He analyses the demand for personalization of art, which causes the rejection of the rigor of work imposed by the artistic structure that is defined by technique. The essence of art becomes a functional relation between the main participants of aesthetic events—a creative artist, an on-looker, a subject matter, a relation consisting in art-experiencing. Their functions intertwine, creating an aesthetical field (cf. A. Berleant, Prze-myśleć estetykę, Kraków 2007). The concept of workshop refers to the idea of shaping reality through art, espoused in all currents and formations of the avant-garde. The postulate refers to two dimensions of experiencing the reality— external and internal. The shaping of external reality is achieved through the arrangement of the public space, introduction of new order of social space, defined by work/artistic process. The shaping of the inner reality encompasses the influence of the creative situation experienced by an individual on his/her mental makeup: views, emotions, values.

File making is a less known branch of smithery, the production of which can be divided into two basic typologically distinct groups - files and rasps. Handmaking of a range of files and rasps included a number of special operations, which led the metal processing sector into becoming a specialized and independent area. The fundamental task of file-making was to create a cutting edge on a prepared forged piece of a file or rasp item. The oldest method was hand crafting which survived from ancient times until the 20th century in almost unchanged form. Independent areas with a strong concentration of file manufacturing were established thanks to some specific conditions. In the Svratka region, a significant part of archaic technologies referring deep into the past of file manufacturing all the way to the 1950s was preserved due to the prosperity of file making.

Equipment of file manufacturing handicraft workshops. The traditional handicraft form of file manufacturing required the creation of aspecific workshop environment. The disposition breakdown of file workshops was not too complicated and it reminded of a smithery in many aspects. File making required highly specialized tools focused on forging and grinding of items, cutting of blades, annealing and tempering. With the narrow specialization, small home-based workshops were established in the Svratka region, in which craftsmen and home-based workmen attended to partial tasks. A strong professional layer of residents also brought the professional language of file makers to the countryside. It did not disappear until the second half of the 20th century. The traditional handicraft manufacturing in the Svratka region disappeared quickly in early 1950s. Hand crafting file makers either entirely ceased their activities or moved on to factories in Jihlava and Hlinsko.

Nowadays, there is a growing need for reflection on the role of drama therapy workshops because of an immense interest in art therapy in general in social or psycho-pedagogical work aimed to support the development of social abilities, in particular communications skills. Therapeutic aspects of art are connected with its impact on psyche, and thus the intensification of specific cognitive, emotional and motivational processes. This paper emphasises personal growth of the participant in relation with a group. In workshop activities, especially during improvisation, the ability to undertake and strengthen positive relations is developing. Reorganization and integration of participants’ attitudes, resulting in better interpersonal relationships, are shown to occur during drama therapy workshops. New attitudes or acquired skills may become for many of them an encouragement to further explorations, an indication of a framework for increased engagement in social interactions.

In the article it is found out that from the beginning of the 1920-s the meaning of local history in Sumy region schools was determined in accordance with the regulations, which were developed by the central Soviet authorities. The main source of guidance on educational institutions have become annual special «advisers on social education» and comprehensive programmes. The approaches, principles and content requirements for regional studies of schools outlined in the introduction of the government regulations, more specific plans of the local education authorities. Preferably the curriculum topics had industrial and regional character. It was stressed that the local education authorities created different kinds of the textbooks, which also served as the carrier content of local history. These publications contributed to the improvement of teaching at school, because it combined both educational and developmental functions. But the teachers of Sumy region failed to create localized tutorials that would meet the full content of education. Regional literature that appeared not always consistent with the principles of scientific, systematic and sequence of the learning process. Besides selected in these publications local material poorly coordinated with educational programs. The formation of the Soviet school in the 20-ies of the twentieth century was accompanied not only by changes in the content of education, but also the search of new approaches to organizational forms of teaching. In order to overcome inherent in prior learning patterns and disadvantages the schools tried to move away from the class-task system and replace it with active learning. The regional excursions are considered as one of the alternatives of the lesson. At the end of the 1920-s the attempts to implement such active learning as design problems were made at the schools of Sumshchyna. Extracurricular forms of local lore developed actively on the territory of the Sumy region in the study period. In particular, the article examines the activities of local history groups in secondary schools.

Bauhaus – what exactly is it about? The new type of art school, founded in 1919 in the city of Weimar by German architect Walter Gropius, its objective was to reimagine the material world through the unity of all the arts. The Bauhaus combined elements of both fine arts and crafts, by means of its appropriate education, under one roof. The teaching process started with a preliminary course introducing the beginners to the study of materials, color theory, and formal relationships in preparation for more specialized studies. This initial course was often taught by visual artists, including Johannes Itten, László Moholy-Nagy, Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, and several others. The workshops included metalworking, weaving, ceramics, carpentry, graphic printing, advertising, photography, glass and wall painting, stone and wood sculpture, and theatre. Gropius explained his vision for a union of crafts, art, and technology in the „Programm des Staatlichen Bauhauses Weimar”. In 1938, the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) launched its first exhibition of the German avant-garde movement, entitled „The Bauhaus 1919–1928”. The Bauhaus experienced its heyday in Dessau, where the “State Bauhaus” became a „School of Design”. After the dissolution of the Bauhaus in Berlin, in 1933, many those who taught and studied over there emigrated contributing to the dissemination of the movement’s activities. The Harvard Art Museums hold one of the first and largest collections relating to the Bauhaus, the 20th century’s most influential school of art and design. Building is nothing but organization: social, technical, economical, psychological organization. Hannes Meyer

Hannes Meyer

Artykuł powstał z zapisków na marginesie wybranych książek Richarda Sennetta. Należą do nich przede wszystkim tomy tworzące trylogię Homo faber: Etyka dobrej roboty (w oryginale: The Craftsman, tytuł przekładu nawiązuje do Traktatu do dobrej robocie), Razem: Rytuały, zalety i zasady współpracy (w oryginale: Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Cooperation) praz Building and Dwelling: Ethics for the City (promowana również pod hasłem: „The Fight for the City”/„Bój o miasto”). Omawiana jest również praca Kultura nowego kapitalizmu. Istotnym przedmiotem rozważań są zasadnicze zmiany cywilizacyjne dokonujące się na początku XXI w., dotyczące w szczególności podejścia do pracy. Omawiając tezy amerykańskiego socjologa, autor nawiązuje, między innymi, do koncepcji prakseologicznych i własnej idei „filozofii praktyczności”, będącej interpretacją myśli Tadeusza Kotarbińskiego. /Redakcja/

The paper origins from notes on the margin of the selected books by Richard Sennett. These include, above all, the three volumes the trilogy Homo faber. Its 1st volume is The Craftsman – in Polish translation published under the title Etyka dobrej roboty, alluding Tadeusz Kotrabiński’s Traktat o dobrej robocie (in English published as Praxiology). The next volumes of the trilogy are: Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Cooperation, and Building and Dwelling: Ethics for the City (also promoted in the article The Fight for the City). Moreover, a book The Culture of New Capitalism by the same author is discussed too. The fundamental changes of our civilization at the beginning of the 21st century – in particular regarding the attitude to work – are of crucial importance in the article. Discussing the theses of the American sociologist, the author refers, among others, to praxiological concepts and his own idea of the „philosophy of practicality”, which is an interpretation of Kotarbiński’s thought.
