The paper presents a content review of “the International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific Searches and Findings” (issues 1-29 from 1991 to 2020). The author highlights that after Ukraine regained its independence in 1991, a wide network of Ukrainian periodicals in the humanities was established. These periodicals perform an important coordinating function, accumulate the efforts of authors, editors and reviewers from different regions of Ukraine and foreign countries and unite them into united teams, as well as reflect trends in scientific development, provide an opportunity to discuss topical issues, influence the dynamics of conceptual updating of socio-humanitarian disciplines in Ukraine. In 1991, the first specialised periodical on world history in independent Ukraine – the Yearbook "International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific Searches and Findings" – was created. The purpose of this Yearbook is to coordinate research carried out by representatives of "the Historical European Studies" Ukrainian academic school. The founders of this school are corresponding members of the NAS of Ukraine F.P. Shevchenko (1914-1995), I.M. Mel'nykova (1918-2010) and P.S. Sokhan' (1926-2013). Since 1991, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine S.V. Vidnyanskyj heads the Department of World History and International Relations (since 2012 the Department of the History of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Ukraine) and leads the aforementioned academic school. In general, the papers published in “the International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific Searches and Findings” from 1991 to 2020 contribute to the reconstruction of a broad panorama of international relations in the lands of Ukraine from the times of Kyivan Rus' until the early 21st century. During its almost thirty-year history, the Yearbook has become an influential periodical of Central and Eastern Europe, contributing to the coordination of fundamental research on world history and the understanding of key issues in world history and Ukraine's place in it.

У статті здійснено огляд змісту випусків 1-29 за 1991–2020 роки збірника «Міжнародні зв’язки України: наукові пошуки і знахідки». Наголошується, що після відновлення незалежності України 1991 року відбулося становлення широкої мережі вітчизняних періодичних видань із гуманітарних наук, що виконують важливу координаційну функцію, акумулюючи зусилля авторів, редакторів і рецензентів із різних регіонів України й зарубіжжя та об’єднуючи їх у єдині колективи, а також відображають тенденції розвитку наукової думки, надають майданчики для обговорення актуальних проблем і дискусій, впливають на динаміку концептуального оновлення української соціогуманітаристики. 1991 року засновано перше в незалежній Україні спеціалізоване періодичне видання зі всесвітньої історії – міжвідомчий збірник наукових праць «Міжнародні зв’язки України: наукові пошуки і знахідки». На цей щорічник покладено завдання координації досліджень представників школи української історичної європеїстики, фундаторами якої є члени-кореспонденти Національної академії наук України Ф.П. Шевченко (1914–1995), І.М. Мельникова (1918–2010) та П.С. Сохань (1926–2013), а з 1991 р. її очолює завідувач відділу всесвітньої історії і міжнародних відносин (з 2012 року – відділ історії міжнародних відносин і зовнішньої політики України), член-кореспондент НАН України С.В. Віднянський, який є відповідальним редактором згаданого збірника від 1993 року. Загалом опубліковані впродовж 1991–2020 рр. у 29 випусках «Міжнародних зв’язків України: наукових пошуків і знахідок» матеріали в комплексі допомагають відтворити багатовимірну панораму міжнародних зв’язків на теренах сучасної України від часів Київської Русі до початку ХХІ ст. на тлі всесвітньоісторичного процесу. За свою майже 30-річну історію щорічник «Міжнародні зв’язки України: наукові пошуки і знахідки» здобув авторитет впливового центрально-східноєвропейського наукового періодичного видання, що здійснює внесок у координацію теоретико-методологічних пошуків у галузі всесвітньої історії, осмислення ключових проблем всесвітньо-історичного процесу й місця в ньому України.

This article presents unknown so far information on the seminar on world history conducted by Ksawery Liske, professor of the Lvov University, in years 1871/1872-1891. On the basis of reports from the scientific-didactic activity of the seminar, written annually according to the requirements of the Ministry of Religion and Public Enlightenment and sent to Vienna, the inventory of students as well as the titles of lectures and written works prepared under the supervision of Professor has been made. The source basis for this elaboration are the documents stored in the District Archives in Lvov. On their basis a list of 126 seminarists actively participating in classes (until now only 26 people were known), topics of 43 lectures and titles of 286 credit works written under the supervision of K. Liske have been made.

W artykule przedstawiono nieznane dotąd informacje na temat seminarium historii powszechnej prowadzonego w latach 1871/1872–1891 przez Ksawerego Liskego, profesora Uniwersytetu Lwowskiego. Na podstawie sprawozdań z działalności naukowo-dydaktycznej seminarium, sporządzanych corocznie na polecenie Ministerstwa Wyznań i Oświecenia Publicznego i przesyłanych do Wiednia, opracowano wykaz studentów oraz tytuły wykładów i prac pisemnych przygotowanych pod kierunkiem profesora. Podstawą źródłową niniejszego opracowania są dokumenty zdeponowane w zasobach Archiwum Obwodowego we Lwowie. Na ich podstawie udało się ustalić listę 126 seminarzystów aktywnie uczestniczących w zajęciach (dotąd znanych było 26 osób), tematy 43 wykładów oraz tytuły 286 prac zaliczeniowych opracowanych pod kierunkiem K. Liskego.

During the last two decades of the 19th century Africa played crucial role in European policy of Balance of Power. It was also an important factor in up keeping tranquillity in Europe. The Scramble for Africa gave the European powers a chance of realizing their imperial ambitions without a risk of pan-European conflict. Therefore during 1880s Germany supported French colonial ambitions, hoping that France would abandon the revenge against Germany. Even weaker states, as Belgium or Italy, could realize there their ambitions. That was a case at least until the end of the 19th century. In a way it was a similar situation as with the proxy wars of 1960s. At the same time, thanks to the technological advances, the expansion in Africa was a cheap kind of imperialism. It allowed European powers and states to realize their ambitions without great financial and human costs.

The article summarises the results of almost 75-year old research activities on world history, international relations and foreign policy of Ukraine by one of the leading departments of the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The history of structural reorganizations of the institute and department, its staff composition, research problems and innovative manner of many scholarly works of the department in the Soviet period on the history of foreign countries and international relations of Ukraine, despite the political and ideological engagement of historical science in the USSR, are investigated. The author focuses on changes in methodological and historiographical paradigm, in the department's research issues following the crash of Communist regimes in Europe, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the break-up of the socialist camp, the end of the Cold War, Ukraine’s declaration of independence. The paper emphasises that for thirty years of Ukrainian independence the researchers of the Department of the History of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Ukraine have prepared over 100 original scholarly publications (individual and collective monographs, thematic collections of scientific papers, historical chronicles, collections of documents and materials, etc.). These scholarly works are a significant achievement of the department and a substantial contribution to the development of national historiography at the present time. The department’s participation is also crucial in training of highly qualified professionals in world history, as evidenced by the preparation and successful defence of about 50 pre-doctoral dissertations and doctoral theses, as well as in developing international scholarly relations among historians and coordination of scientific activities in Ukraine focusing on world history and international relations.

У статті узагальнюються результати майже 75-річної діяльності одного з провідних відділів Інституту історії України НАН України з дослідження питань всесвітньої історії, міжнародних відносин і зовнішньої політики України. Розглядаються історія структурних реорганізацій інституту та відділу, формування й характеристика його кадрового складу, проблематика та інноваційний характер багатьох праць наукових співробітників відділу радянського періоду з проблем історії зарубіжних країн та міжнародних зв’язків України, незважаючи на політичну й ідеологічну заангажованість історичної науки в СРСР, а також зміна методологічної та історіографічної парадигм і проблематики досліджень відділу після повалення комуністичних режимів у Європі, розпаду Радянського Союзу й соціалістичного блоку та закінчення «холодної війни» і проголошення незалежності України. Зокрема наголошується, що за 30 років української незалежності науковими співробітниками відділу історії міжнародних відносин і зовнішньої політики України підготовлено й опубліковано понад 100 оригінальних наукових видань (індивідуальних і колективних монографій, тематичних збірників наукових праць, історичних хронік, збірників документів і матеріалів тощо), що є значним творчим здобутком відділу загалом і суттєвим внеском у розвиток вітчизняної історичної науки на сучасному етапі. Вагомим є також внесок відділу в підготовку висококваліфікованих наукових кадрів зі всесвітньої історії, підтвердженням чого є підготовка в ньому й успішний захист близько 50 докторських і кандидатських дисертацій, у розвиток міжнародних наукових зв’язків істориків та координацію наукових досліджень зі всесвітньої історії і міжнародних відносин в Україні.
