This article will explain and critically examine Hannah Arendt’s concept of worldliness with the aim of clarifying its limitations when it is used in the context of the social sciences, particularly where understanding and contributing to solving the problem of the forced displacement of people are concerned. Arendt defines “worldliness” as “having a world” in the double sense of having a tangible world of references and a political world. Her ideas regarding the worldliness of tribes and stateless people will be discussed and criticized, together with her avoidance of considering the relevance of oral history and oral resources and her position on human rights. Finally, this article proposes that social scientists require a broader conception of worldliness, in which intangible resources like shared oral narratives, virtual networks or shared views of the homeland are not dismissed, and can even serve as a basis for fighting for political and social rights.

Friendship was an essential ferment in the advent of a new kind of sociability in the seventeenth-century France. The comic novel — and especially Sorel’s works— with its ambition to accurately portraiting the world, provides a unique vantage point for observing this phenomenon. Whether honest friendship is praised or mocked, Sorel offers various images of a link between the characters that is often tantamount to belonging to the same environment. As a criterion of social discrimination, friendship is shown in an ambivalent light: thus, Lysis is mocked by his friends because he does not control gallantry codes (Berger extravagant). Yet, the purpose is not to denigrate a virtue regarded as fundamental in the social life. The reason why Neophile and Polyandre are friends yet love rivals (Polyandre), just as are Francion and Cléandre (Francion), is that narrative techniques shift the painting of friendship towards an aesthetic of varietas meant to make it plausible. Thus the characters embody different variations of the stereotype of worldly friendship, allowing the reader to question its role in the society of the time. This worldly aspect is complemented by Sorel with another one in which the society of friends constitutes a crucible for other values that are capable to transcend the artifice of the most commonly shared social codes to assert a libertine credo (Francion).

The article attempts to reinterpret Marian Pankowski’s literary project. The author that has been marginally present in Polish reception, read once again in the context of modern theo-ries and discourses reveals the maturity and timeliness of his themes, asking difficult ques-tions concerning the identity of man in the 20th century. The author of Matuga is interested in the very foundations of pre-modern world; he asks questions about the sense of religion, meaning of the traditionally perceived concept of nationality and ‘functionality’ of pre- Victorian model of morality. In the article author’s conviction, such artistic attitude was possible only due to constant existence between the home country and the exile, between East and West, due to some ‘world-being’ that enabled him to ask a reader some difficult questions about condition of the contemporary man, question missing in Polish literature at that time. The author of the article is also convinced that the most important and interesting cultural (and literary) processes always take place at the borderlands, where different cultures, genres and identities meet. Such notion is based on postcolonial theory by Edward Said.

The article on “Kamień na kamieniu” is an attempt to look at the philosophical as-pects of the novel by Wiesław Myśliwski through oppositions such as sur-face/depth or weak/strong, locating the longing of the main character of the novel on the side of the superficial and worldly, while pointing out his religious yearning for a profound aspect of his existence, which, according to the interpretation suggested in the article, is also located within the superficial. The article is intended to present “Kamień na kamieniu” as a novel about a good “host” in the world by demonstrating the dialectic between the brothers Szymon Pietruszka and Michał.
