From the 12th to the 14th of May, 2005, there was a conference on the subject of contemporary construction in historic urban landscapes: “World Heritage and Contemporary Architecture – Managing the Historic Urban Landscape”. During the meetings the memorandum “World Heritage and Contemporary Architecture – Managing the Historic Urban Landscape”, otherwise known as the Vienna Memorandum, was presented, which invokes the Venice Charter and other international documents which relate to the protection of historic monuments, environmental protection and lasting development. The objective of the memorandum was to summarize experiences and outline movements in conservation activities in World Heritage cities. In the discussions it was stated that a strategic approach, in creating plans for administration and local legal decisions which are supported by thorough knowledge about the place and its context, as well as consideration of contemporary mechanisms for economic and social development, will allow for the attainment of the established goals. The Vienna Memorandum will be presented to the World Heritage Committee for approval and introduction. Information about the conference, accompanied by the presentation of the text of the memorandum, can be found on the Internet at the following address: www.worldheritage2005.at
The article presents two generations of Chinese architects (architects of the so-called First and Second Wave) operating in the post-Mao period, that is, since the reforms of Deng Xiaoping. The main purpose of the article is to present the works of the youngest architects of the Second Wave and try to characterize them. Examples illustrating the article are the realizations of such offices as: META-Project (Wang Shuo), TAOA (Tao Lei), ZAO/standardarchitecture (Zhang Ke), Zhao Yang Architects and DnA_Design and Architecture (Xu Tian an). Selected projects are certainly an inspiring example of the experimental Chinese architecture of recent years - critical architecture, which in response to the mistakes of previous years, associated with extensive modernization of cities, tried to rebuild the relationship with the lost tradition, direct and focus its attention to problems of locality and man and his heritage in the modern world. The article was compiled on the basis of source materials obtained directly from architectural offices as part of the author’s work on the exhibition Contemporary Architecture of China, Localized Modernism. The author together with prof. Wang Lu (Tsinghua Univ., Beijing) were co-curators of this first presentation of Chinese architecture in Poland. The exhibition was presented at the Manggha Museum, its opening was accompanied by the Architecture Biennial in Krakow in 2017.

Przykłady ilustrujące artykuł to realizacje takich biur jak: META-Project (Wang Shuo), TAOA (Tao Lei), ZAO/standardarchitecture (Zhang Ke), Zhao Yang Architects oraz DnA_Design and Architecture (Xu Tian an). Wystawa została zaprezentowana w Muzeum Manggha, jej otwarcie towarzyszyło Biennale Architektury w Krakowie w roku 2017.
Architektura proekologiczna to aktualny i modny trend, wzmacniany przez politykę zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz ekonomiczne przesłanki rynku nieruchomości. Architekci, aby wdrożyć ekologiczne rozwiązania, proponują wiele ciekawych sposobów, wśród których zauważalne są dwie tendencje. Jedna oparta na wdrożeniach nowoczesnych technologii i druga hołdująca logice i oryginalności myśli inżynierskiej wynikającej z obserwacji natury. Renzo Piano, włoski architekt, laureat Nagrody Pritzkera z 1998 roku w mistrzowski sposób łączy te dwa podejścia tworząc wyjątkową jakość architektury proekologicznej, czego przykładem jest m.in. budynek siedziby gazety “The New York Times” w Nowym Jorku.

Pro-ecological architecture is a current trend, reinforced by the policy of sustainable development and economic premises of real estate. Architects, in order to implement ecological solutions into the design, offer many interesting solutions, among which two tendencies are the most noticeable. The first, based on the usage of new technologies and the second, fostering the logic and originality of engineering thought resulting from the observation of nature. Renzo Piano, an Italian architect and the winner of 1998 Pritzker Prize, masterfully combines these two approaches, thus creating an outstanding and unique quality of ecological architecture. The presented building of The New York Times magazine in New York is an excellent example of this philosophy.
