This paper deals with translated titles of about 1500 Polish editions corresponding to nearly 400 French youth literature works published in Poland over aperiod of nearly one century (1918–2014). Titles have been analyzed in an extratextual perspective, i.e. from the point of view of text-external factors which may have an influence on the choice or the final formulation of the translated title. (1) We focus first on the time factor which implies changes of trends in the way two title elements are treated: (1.1.) title structure, and (1.2.) some proper names included in the translated titles. (2) Secondly, we analyse retranslation and reprint, two factors which are closely linked with the introduction of changes in the translated titles. For this purpose, we review (2.1.) the frequency and conditions of transformation of the translated titles, and (2.2.) their causes. (3) Thirdly, we analyse some motivations for the choice of translated titles linked with the processes of seriality. Two situations are observed: (3.1.) the publisher of the translation follows the same strategy as the publisher of the original, or (3.2.) he prepares his own independent strategy.
This paper reports a survey conducted in May 2010 on a nationally representative sample of fifteen-year-olds from 70 lower secondary schools. The general research question concerned the prevalence of Polish adolescents who did not read books after completing the phase of compulsory education. The aim of this study was to describe the place of books in teenage everyday life in terms of their reading for school, leisure, spontaneous choice of reading matter, their favourites, books they recommended, value placed on enjoyable reading and their social circle of readers. Gender was found to be a differentiating factor in the reading habits of these young people which the paper broadly describes.
The object of the present paper is to check if contrasts may be observed between non-translated Polish youth literature and youth literature translated from French into Polish, on the example of the use of syntaxically unintegrated nominal address forms containing civility titles. Our analyze shows four contrasts, each one concerning another type of address form: (a) civility title + CHRISTIAN NAME, (b) civility title + TITLE, (c) civility title + FAMILY NAME, and (d) analytic vocative form PROSZĘ + civility title. Observed contrasts seem to have two different origins: (1) actual differences between the Polish and French address systems, and (2) the translator’s choice of a strategy which favours the emergence of deviations. We also propose a refl ection on the potential effects which the gaps between translated texts and genuine literature seen as the norm can have on the Polish reader.
The article initially discusses the potential reception of the cover of the first edition of the novel by Aleksander Minkowski entitled Valley of Light. Next, the article passes to the strategy contained in the novel’s exposure: focalization, narrative style and relations of the protagonist with other characters, as well as sources of potential conflict constructing the story, are analyzed. In these analyzes, the model reader of this youth novel is taken into account, as well as the emotions that individual stylistic holds and great narrative figures can evoke. In this perspective, the concepts of Gaston Bachelard, Roland Barthes and Rita Felski are used, among others.

Animals inhabit children’s literature. What is at stake is to explain the reasons for this study by emphasizing what contributions and impacts these furred, feathered or shelled heroes make to a young readership. According to their age, young readers will be more or less attracted by a specific type of animal, the human hero’s animal companion, the identifiable anthropomorphic animal hero or the leading and facilitating one likely to help and accompany them in their discovery of the world.

The fifth volume of ELSE URY’S Nesthäkchen series, published around 1920, combines typical elements of the “Backfischroman” (teenage girl novel) with motifs of the German Revolution of 1918/1919 and creates a partially heterogenic and partially homogenic narrative. In this context the idea behind the entire series is presented and the way in which the series became part of the process of modernization and politicization of books for girls in the late Empire is discussed. The analysis shows how the text focuses on the revolution, class conflict, and debates on student councils from a bourgeois perspective, foregrounding them as the most important aspects of the “revolutionary novel for young girls”.

The authorities in the communist Poland saw literature for children and young people as an important tool in the ideological struggle to be used primarily to educate new generations of citizens in the spirit of the socialist ideology. In the late 1940s and early 1950s there was a marked intensifi cation of the activities of Główny Urząd Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk (the Central Bureau for the Control of the Press, Publishing and Public Performances) in Warsaw and its regional branches. Their objective was undoubtedly to promote the desired content only and this activity is documented by, for example, review reports kept in Archiwum Akt Nowych (the Central Archives of Modern Records) and dealing with books for children and young people submitted for publication. The surviving documents reveal the bureaucratic methods used by this institution and contain interesting examples of the socialist realist newspeak. The review reports indicate a number of strategies applied to impose on young readers the only ideologically correct vision of the world. There are 3 groups of reviews in the analysed materials: negative, positive, and the ones accepting the work in question provided that suggested changes were introduced. Censors examined not only contemporary works; “correction” of classic works (e.g. fairy tales) to adapt them to the offi cial ideology was a fairly common phenomenon. Some subjects (e.g. social transformations, development of rural areas, great industrial investments) were clearly promoted; specifi c types of plots were imposed as well. At the same time some issues, especially those associated with historical facts inconvenient for the new government (Warsaw Uprising, Home Army, social role of the Catholic Church) were either limited or eliminated entirely from works to be published. Censors tried to place the historical- -literary process within the framework of class the struggle. The basic premise of this approach was to be the predominance of realist content, hence the censors’ frequent criticism concerning anthropomorphism, which is characteristic of children’s literature. All works, especially those addressed to young readers, were to be optimistic, imbued with vitality, work ethos and the spirit of collective action. The control apparatus had a signifi cant infl uence on the themes and quality of the works of the “fourth” literature published in 1948–1956, contributing to their schematic character and to the elimination of many eminent writers and poets from circulation.

Children's literature reflects society and conveys new models. This field evolves depending on the representations of childhood that adults build. Recent research shows that children experience deep emotions and that reading contributes to their social and affective development. This paper examines the different issues related to writing the affects aimed at young readers through the study of Astrid Lindgren's novel Les frères Coeur-de-Lion. It focuses on ethical, aesthetic and linguistic questions involved in translating the book from Swedish to French.
