The article discusses the specific features of the semiotic organization of a digital text and, in particular, the structure of a digital sign. Three aspects of the digital sign are analyzed: the layer of representation (the polysemiotic and interactive nature of the sign), its substance (the 0-1 code, which is of immaterial nature, turns images, words and sounds into information of the same type that can be easily cross-linked and shared) and the functions played by digital signs. One can distinguish the following functions of digital signs: the creation of meanings, the function of linking to another text-page, and the ability to introduce changes to the text (to modify or even manipulate it ). The creation of meanings in a digital message is influenced by such features of the sign and the text as multimediality and polysemiotic character, the ability to program and combine different reception methods, editing as the principle of text creation, palimpsests and hybridization of discourse.
Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest problem pamięci kulturowej w kontekście badań nad dyskursem o nachyleniu semiotycznym. Podejmowana jest próba wykorzystania instrumentarium analiz dyskursu historycznego w refleksji nad pamięcią. Tytułowe archiwum znaków – semantycznie profilowanych w dyskursie – potraktowane zostaje jako rezerwuar wiedzy zgromadzonej i przenoszonej dzięki językowi, literaturze i sztuce.

The main goal of this article is to present cultural memory in the context of semiotically-oriented discourse studies. An attempt is made to apply theoretical approaches of analyses of historical discourse in the field of cultural memory. The archive of signs, semantically profiled in discourse, is understood as a reservoir of knowledge stored and conveyed by language, literature and arts.

Semiotic self has the ability to thinking through sign forms about phenomena which experiences and identity also occur in special sign representations. In activity the thought gets the sign forms representing phenomena, in the experience it has the symbolic form, in the reflection it gains the form of identity signs. Negligence in thinking of representation of action objects, feeling relations, and axiological reflection seems to be the reason why the social context of self in psychological conceptions becomes some anonymous society, abstract culture and history.
This article presents examples of the relationship between culture, dance, and the body in the fields of communication (with oneself, the community, God/deity), the social hierarchy, social values, relations between the individual and the group, and relations between genders, from the perspective of the sociology of the dance. The sociological perspective also indicates the various historical, ritual, control, and regulatory roles that traditional and modern dances play in the communities in which they arise and are performed. The second part of the text contains a case study of the Japanese ankoku butoh dance. The author presents the philosophical roots of the dance (e.g., Japanese mythology, Zen Buddhist philosophy) and the creator’s personal experiences (childhood trauma and post-war social situation) as factors that influenced the dance’s development. The example of ankoku butoh illustrates the interrelation between cultural meanings and dance movements.
The introduction of the use of Czech Sign Language was closely associated with the establishment of the first Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Prague in 1786. Probably the oldest and also the most extensive source of sign is the book published in 1834, Unterrichte der Taubstummen in der Lautsprache nebst einigen Bemerkungen über die Geberdenzeichen der Taubstummen by director Johann Mücke (1770–1840), which contains a dictionary with the verbal description of 261 signs, divided in to the thematic groups Food and Drink, Clothing and Associated Objects, Household Fittings and Furniture, Writing Requisites and Toys, Miscellaneous frequent subjects, Animals, People, Verbs. Thanks to the preserved data of the period we can look at current signs from the diachronic perspective, identify their original motivation and trace their origin.
The article attempts to present a synthetic and confrontational outline of views on the language theory of Humboldt, Baudouin, and Saussure. The author indicates the relationship between their ideas, as well as traces the most important relations between the scholars. Finally, a hypothesis is formulated explaining the relationships between their doctrines. The conceptions of the language of Humboldt, Baudouin, and Saussure correspond to the Kant's hypothesis that the objects of experience are the product of the mind, which should be considered as one of the forms of idealism.

Review of a book dedicated to the subject of the library described and analyzed in cultural and social context. The author states that there are two major components that constitute the library: tangible and intangible. The first one are obvious material and functional factors such as books, the organizational structure, the management style of the institution and the staff. The latter one is the cultural superstructure, the so-called spirit, the aura of the library which has developed and evolved to build its image and identity.
Krzyż i zmartwychwstanie Jezusa położyły kres świątyni jerozolimskiej. Jezus ustanowił nowy kult „w duchu i prawdzie”. Świątynią stało się Jego ciało. Zmartwychwstały Pan gromadzi narody, jednoczy ludzi z Bogiem i między sobą w sakramencie swojego Ciała i Krwi. On jest nową świątynią ludzkości. Stanowi to sens znaku oczyszczenia świątyni.

From the theological reflection of early Christianity emerges the theological thought in the form of the Gospel. Four different perspectives on the work of Jesus were formed under the influence of changing the external circumstances of the life of Christians. This article is an attempt to capture the guiding thoughts of St. John’s description of the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee, and the cleansing of the temple (Jn 2:1–22) Jesus in Cana of Galilee opens an era of grace, which is actualized in the community of the Church in the sacramental life, especially in the Eucharist. The cross and resurrection of Jesus put the end to the Temple in Jerusalem. Jesus instituted the new worship “in spirit and truth”. His body became the temple. The Risen Lord gathers nations, unites men with God and with each other in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. He is the new temple of humanity. This is the meaning of the sign of purification of the temple.

The following paper is based on the semiotic approaches, which give pictures the status of signs, and addresses concurrently the problem of the condition of pictures as signs. The discussion in this article ranges from the question of the sign character of traditional and earlier digital pictures, to the question of the contemporary concept of picture and of the sign character of the contemporary pictures, which are present in the modern media.

In this article, I gave into consideration the essence of creating demotivators (memes). To fully illustrate their idea, I conducted two surveys which I asked about features and needs fulfilled by these cultural texts. I presented some information about the history, the artists and the “intentions” of so-called demotivating posters. From the bunch of daily created internet memes I chose those that over the years present the highest heads of the Russian state: Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev. The most essential demotivator which I have collected is their shared picture, assembled for the purpose of artistic moment, topped with a remarkable commentary. I think that the phenomenon of demotivators can be described as semiotics because they have a significant impact on society. They allow us to evaluate how the spiritual condition of the mass media human is changing. They come from a semiotic system that should be considered in the linguistic context.

The focus of this thesis is an interpretation and exegesis of the first sign of Jesus. A passage from the Gospel of John (John 2:1-12) was analysed. In the analysis of the text rhetorical method was used and it was based on the principles developed by Hebrew biblical rhetoric. The article was divided into 3 interdependent points. In the first one, the text was delimited, justifying the division of the Gospel and the delimitation of the text. The second point shows a detailed segmentation. First, by „looking at the bottom”, to look at the text as a whole at the third point and to justify a symmetrical-centric structure. The conducted research allowed to make analyses included in the second point of the article. First, the biblical context of selected issues was presented, and then the interpretation of each part. This stage made it possible to notice the connections between the units described in the next section and to justify the previously shown composition figure of ABCDC’B’A.At the beginning of the third point, an interpretation of seven examined units in their references to the parallel fragments was provided, what allowed to draw theological conclusions. A wedding is an image of a messianic banquet. It reveals a New Covenant, which will be realized in the coming “hour” of Jesus. God’s glory becomes accessible for everyone who does the will of Christ. Great help for us is Mary, Mother of Jesus, who is an intercessor between her Son and the People.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest interpretacja i egzegeza pierwszego znaku Jezusa. Omówiony został fragment Ewangelii według św. Jana (J 2,1-12). W pierwszym z nich została dokonana delimitacja tekstu, uzasadniająca podział Ewangelii i wyznaczone granice tekstu. W drugim punkcie została ukazana szczegółowa segmentacja. Najpierw poprzez „spojrzenia z dołu”, aby w trzecim punkcie spojrzeć na tekst całościowo i uzasadnić symetryczno-koncentryczną budowę.Przeprowadzone badania pozwoliły na dokonanie analiz zawartych w drugim punkcie artykułu. Najpierw został przedstawiony kontekst biblijny wybranych zagadnień, a następnie interpretacja każdej z części.
The article presents four programmes of artistic photography related to the reflection on media. The initial part is devoted to the specificity of relationship between photography and the so called pre-media, characterized by perception, that is light, air. The second chapter presents the relationship between photographic grain structure and the uniform field theory which forms the basis of knowledge in the scope of visual composition and creation of signs. Within the third part, the photography is described at the background of the development of digital technology impacting substantially the change of process of picture creation. The final chapter concerns relations between photography and the social media, understood as a specific bond linking people who avail of photographs for communication purposes.

The subject of this work is the images, or more accurately said, the state of our knowledge about the set consisting of artifacts such as the Venus de Milo, the Gioconda, the duck decoys (or “fake birds”) used to hunt ducks, toys such as a doll or a paper airplane and drawings such as the planes drawn up by engineers or architects. Our purpose is to discuss the understanding of images currently considered canonical – i.e., the theory that states that images are a modality of signs. We will do this by analyzing “The Family of images” a proposal developed by W.J.T. Mitchell in a famous essay entitled “What is an image?”. After introducing readers to the subject and outlining a diagnosis about the current status quæstionis of theory of images, we will study Mitchell’s proposal and criticize the thesis (assumed and brilliantly presented by this author) that states that images are nothing more than a more or less sui generis modality of signs. Finally, in the section dedicated to the conclusions, we will outline a proposal of an alternative approach to the study of the images that, instead of seeing them as signs, considers them as tool-artifacts.

The paper presents a fragment, unknown not only to a broader scientific readership but also to specialists in the field, of Ferdinand Tönnies’ sociological system, relating to language as a means of social communication. The first part of the paper is devoted to his general theory of sign and their typology. He divides signs, firstly, into those independent of the human will, including extrahuman and involuntary ones, and those intentionally fixed by the human will, and, secondly, into individual and collective (social) ones. The second part of the paper deals directly with Tönnies language theory. The condition of using a language, as a system of social signs, is understanding (Verstehen), i.e., giving it a specific meaning by the addresser and reproducing that meaning by the addressee. Both acts may rest on mutually opposed personality and mentality types: essential will, being a blend of instincts, emotions and conscience, and arbitrary will, or a rational world view linked with calculation of self interests.
Trudno bowiem uwierzyć, by Bóg czynił je jedynie dla samej ingerencji w świat i życie ludzkie. Jednocześnie budzi On i umacnia wiarę, pod wpływem dokonanego uzdrowienia. Do tej misji posłał Chrystus cały Kościół, czego wyrazem jest posłanie i obietnice przekazane Apostołom (Mk 16,15-17).

The multiplicity of miracles and signs that are written in the Bible, prompts us to ask questions about their proper message. It is difficult to believe that God did it only for the sake of interference in the world and in human life. Healing disease is one of the more common signs of God for people. In this action we can clearly see that God transcends the human body and takes care of the person as a whole. The Gospel scenes are the unquestionable proof of that. The attitude of a man, who is the recipient of healing, is important as well as is the attitude of witnesses of this event. The article shows the Old Testament background to understand the miracle-sign, also at the terminology level. The activity of God and Christ, performing healings has been shown in the context of salvation. which gives this ministry the right meaning. This is also confirmed by the terminology presented in relation to the thaumaturgic ministry of Jesus. Based on this background the relationship between faith and healing has been presented in relation to Christ, to the person receiving the healing, as well as to the witnesses of this event. In the last section of the article the author presents the mission of healing with faith and in the power of the Holy Spirit realised through the Church. The biblical miracles, including healings, can be properly understood only in the light of faith. It is impossible to interpret the actions of God, if one does not believe in Him. For this reason, in the thaumaturgic ministry of Jesus, who also acts with faith, trust that He can perform a miracle is a condition for healing. He calls to the faith those, who He heals, as well as witnesses of this event. At the same time He stimulates and strengthens the faith, under the influence of healing. Christ sent the whole Church for this mission,, which is reflected in the message and promises transferred to the Apostles (Mk 16,15-17).
Th e aim of this paper is to inquire into the possibilities of utilising personal ads as a source of cultural-anthropological research. Specifi cally, it proposes an analysis of a corpus of over 500 ads, published in 1931–1934 in a magazine of the Czechoslovak homosexual minority, the Voice of the Sexual Minority. It proposes to approach these very short utterances as signs, analytical work being possible only at the level of the signifi er. It also proposes to analyse some crucial expressions, repeated very often in these ads, through the concept of a symbolic-deictic fi eld. In this way, the paper reaches a conclusion that sheds new light on conceptual categories of the interwar Czechoslovak homosexual subculture, which have not yet been perceived by a classical historical research.

The aim of this article is the analysis of discourse on the region from the semiotic perspective and using the theory of marketing. We assume that the region is established and experienced by its representations. We consider these representations as a maps of meanings and simultaneously as a maps of social-cultural reality. We are going to examine what kind of sign systems organized according to certain codes consists the sum of the maps constituting the semiotic map of Małopolska. Relating to the Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding and decoding we aim to answer the following questions: - which of these codes are dominating? - if it is possible to distinguish the oppositional codes? - how the semiotic map of the region is influenced by the politics of representation? - which values are promoted by the logo of Małopolska and by the promotional companies of the region?

Jakie wartości komunikuje logo Małopolski i promujące ją kampanie?
