W artykule omawiamy zróżnicowanie w wymowie końcówki (-ing) wśród nastolatków urodzonych w Szkocji oraz imigrantów z Polski mieszkających w Edynburgu. Rozkład wariantów wymowy morfemu pokazuje, że nastolatki polskie do pewnego stopnia przyswoiły sobie zróżnicowanie widoczne w wymowie młodzieży lokalnej. Widzimy zatem, że częstotliwość występowania wariantów in/ing może być postrzegana jako odzwierciedlenie wymowy lokalnej, jednak czynniki, które przyczyniają się do wyboru konkretnych wariantów, różnią się znacząco wśród grup.

This study analyses (in/ing) variation among migrant (Polish) and local adolescents in two British cities: Edinburgh and London. We trace the distribution of variants available and suggest that the factors contributing to the acquisition of variation (or lack of it) among migrant adolescents, depends on a numer of language-internal and language-external factors. We argue that the frequency of occurrence of a given variant among migrant adolescents can be seen as a reflection of the speech pattern of their local peers. However, the factors that contribute to the variant choice differ significantly between the groups.

Language differentiation is an unquestionable fact, nonetheless its magnitude is not. The causes of the divergence are twofold: the first rests in our paucity of knowledge about the large number of languages; the other derives from the fact that there are no clear-cut linguistic criteria to differentiate between an individual language and a dialect of a language. Out of controversies within the status of such and similar tools of social communication rose the popularity of the concept and term of ethnolect. That languages are differentiated across the world can be approached from two points of view: a practical and communicative one (that can be the position held by communication engineering) and an anthropocultural one.

Spis ludności Meksyku z 2005 roku wyróżnia 70 języków, jakimi posługują się jego mieszkańcy. W tym kraju przynależność etniczna jest określana za pomocą używanego języka. Grupa ludności tubylczej w Meksyku (indigena) to ponad sześciomilionowa społeczność, stanowiąca 6,5% całej populacji kraju. Szczególnym przypadkiem zróżnicowania etniczno-językowego jest stan Distrito Federal – czyli stolica Ciudad de México. Jest on, wspólnie z sąsiednim stanem México, najbardziej zdywersyfikowany pod względem liczby używanych języków. W artykule zbadano przestrzenną dystrybucję grup etnicznych na terenie miasta, a także przedstawiono charakterystykę ich struktur społecznych. Zbadano również poziom życia Indian i ludności hiszpańskojęzycznej.

In Mexico, ethnicity is defined based on the language used by a given individual. The indigenous population of Mexico numbers over six million, which is 6.5% of the country’s overall population. The 2005 Mexico Population Census reveals 70 different languages used in the country. The capital city of Mexico – Ciudad de México (Distrito Federal), is a special case with a small percentage of indigenous peoples (1.5%) but a very large variety of languages. The same is true of the adjacent State of México. The paper covers the spatial distribution of ethnic groups across Mexico City as well as selected social characteristics. This includes the age structure and the level of illiteracy for the Indian population and the Spanish-speaking population as well as the Human Development Index. The paper also analyzes the standard of living of both studied populations. The standard of living was measured in terms of infrastructure and selected household products owned by Indians and Spanish speakers.
