In the article the film of Andrei Tarkovsky is interpreted in terms of a labyrinth. The author presents the principles governing the construction of the film (double roles, colours), its content and form of individual episodes and scenes, and reveals the meaning contained within them, and expressed through various elements (including music and cinematography) integrated into the motion picture. Kusmierczyk concentrates on the analysis of space and time, and on individual characters, paying particular attention to the scene where the Narrator's illness is shown and its cultural context (Orthodox Christianity, Tibetan Book of the Dead) as well as the character of the Mother. Additional analysis is devoted to scenes of collective memory (e.g. printing-house), and explanations relating to archival film material included in the film. The author, referring to the principles of internal perspective, also provides an interpretation of the scenes in which the characters look straight into the camera.
