In her diaries Maria Dabrowska expresses concerns about the future of European and Polish culture after 1945. According to the authorrss, Polish culture is threatened with russification which being conducted with 'devilish force and cunning'. Dabrowska exaggerated the susceptibility of Poles to such danger. She believed that the Catholic Church could not provide an effective barrier against it, nor could the publications appearing abroad - of which Dabrowska was critical. Which is why an intellectual can only serve his nation effectively if he remains in Poland. Thus, a large part of the diaries was devoted to the defence of Polishness.
