This is a comparative study of two 17th C. translations of Pierre Corneille's 'Le Cid', the Polish one by Jan Andrzej Morsztyn and the Dutch one by Johan van Heemskerk (1641). The analysis of two contemporary renderings of the French play reveals not only some differences in translation technique but also offers a number of insights into two radically different models of 17th C. culture, one characteristic of Poland, the other - of the Netherlands. The article attempts to show how the conventions of French classicism were adapted to the Polish and Dutch literary traditions, and especially how they were affected by the sociopolitical attitude towards Spain which prevailed in the two countries. While the Dutch statehood and identity had formed in opposition to the Spanish ethos, no such antagonism existed in Poland.
