The article summarizes the life and work of painter Leopold Horovitz (1838, Rozhanovce - 1917, Vienna). Of Jewish origin, educated in Kosice and Vienna and active in Hungary, Austria, Poland and France, L. Horovitz concentrated on portrait and genre painting, through his whole career working in an academically classic style. This strategy proved to be highly successful. In Vienna, he found his way to the circle of artists gathered around the court of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
