This demographic analysis of the congregation of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Johns in Torun from 1793 to 1914 pays special attention to the political and socioeconomic situation during the titular period. The research, based on marriage, birth and death certificates, shows the development of a population characteristic for many nineteenth-century Polish cities. The growth in question was accelerated by economic transformations and the establishment of industrial enterprises, and hampered by epidemics and periodical economic stagnation. In the case of marriages the investigations determined the status of the newlyweds - the largest number of marriages involved single men and women aged 24-28 and 21-26, respectively. Newborn babies were predominated by boys; the researchers also established the masculinisation index and the births/marriages index (from 3 to 4,7). The percentage of illegitimate births grew from 7% to almost 18% of the total, reflecting the character of the examined community. Deaths were analysed from the viewpoint of gender and age - as many as 60% comprised children aged up to 4; stillborn children constituted from 3% to 7% of all births. The analysis also encompassed marriage, birth and death coefficients, the natural birth rate coefficient, and the demographic dynamic index, which showed that despite assorted obstacles the studied population grew and disclosed demographic progression. The early twentieth century featured a discernible correlation between economic development and demographic growth, absent in the nineteenth century.
