There are attempts to derive the surname Чаев from a non attested first name *Чайо, allegedly derived from Old-Bulg. ÷àÿò¸, ÷à« ‘wait (for)’. In fact, the surname Чаев has its origin in the south-west dialectal variant *чайа (with ч instead of к’) from the well-known кехая or кея/кия ‘village crier; overseer; chief shepherd’ (a borrowing from the Turkish dial. kehaya and/or liter. kâhya). The author argues that the surnames Киов, Кяев and Кяйчев have a similar origin, which has also been explained in a wrong manner so far.
