In spite of apparent homogeneity, atolls constitute the environment which is diverse with regard not only to natural and anthropogenic features, but also to forms of their land use. This paper makes an attempt to analyse the relationship between the selected attributes of the atolls (76 out of 400 were selected) and the economy on the islands. The thesis states that the selected features of the atolls affect the type and diversification of space management. Among the methods used, the modified method of typology of world agriculture created by J. Kostrowicki (within the framework of International Geographical Union) was the basic one. The analysis led to the conclusion that majority of selected features of the atolls do influence the type of economic activity, although the extent of this influence is varied. The influence on diversification of space management, however, failed to be proved.
