The performance of various rituals and the use of symbols have accompanied humanity since time immemorial. They hold particular significance in law, where their correct execution or use is associated with intended legal effects. Rituals and symbols played a role in ancient Roman law not only during the archaic period but were also used in later times, during the Republic and the Empire. We encounter them in all areas of law, in private law, including legal procedures, criminal law, and in the operations of Roman state authorities.
