Abekirezun (ca 1390-ca 1471) was at first a disciple and then the successor of Ist'ifanos, the founder of the monastic movement of Stephanites. His gedl reveals the great flowering of this movement, but at the same time controversies and persecution it sufferd from the local powers, the king and other monasteries. Gedl does not mention the reason of these controversies but we can conclude that they were caused by the rule of Stephanites 'hidden from people from outside' and stressing the poverty and loneliness of monks thanks to which they made 'the new people' of Ethiopia. The belief in double resurrection and the negation or different understanding of the cult of St. Mary would be a theological mistake.
