Demographic policy accompanies Chinese society since fifties till now. During that period a number of campaigns aimed at declining natural increase of population size resulted in significant demographic changes. Apart from visible changes in fertility behaviors, population campaigns in interaction with socio-economic factors influenced also to certain degree the fertility preferences for gender and desired number of children. The article focuses on the issue of China's population policy and its demographic context as well as on its impact on fertility preferences of Chinese society.
