View of the former director of the Ethnological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (1988-1992) on the institute history. Looking at the history of both the discipline and the Institute during his forty years' career at the Institute he sheds light on the wider social, political and research contexts framing development of the discipline at the end of 20th Century. His memories aid him in mapping and depicting particular personal relations, several historically important moments, publications as well as the atmosphere of an everyday working environment at the Institute of Ethnology.
