The author describes a trek through the Goncha Gorge in the very northeastern corner of Gojjam in 1995. He observed life and customs which reminded him of descriptions of life in medieval England as described by Barbara Hanawalt in a book recreating the essence of life at that time, 'The Ties that Bind'. He describes striking similarities between traditional peasant life in today's Ethiopia and life in medieval England in style of houses, customs relating to food and drink, family life and social organization.
