(Title in Polish - 'Nowy gmach Muzeum Slaskiego w Katowicach. Konkurs miedzynarodowy na koncepcje architektoniczna glównego gmachu Muzeum Slaskiego w Katowicach'). An international architectural competition for a project of a new building of the Silesian Museum in Katowice was announced on 30 October 2006; its verdict was made known on 15 June 2007. The condition formulated by the competition was a design for a new building within the southern block of the former 'Katowice' Coal Mine, which from December 2004 became the property of the Silesian Museum, and along a by-pass road (DTS). The remaining land not encompassed by the competition contains historical buildings of the former coalmine, which became the theme of an adaptation programme (discussed in the 47th issue of 'Muzealnictwo'). The competitors included teams of architects and town planners from Poland, Austria, France, The Netherlands, and Germany. The total of the teams was 65 and competition projects were presented by 18 of them. The international jury awarded first prize to Riegler Riewe Architekten ZT Ges.m.b.H, from Graz (Austria), and two third prizes went to the following teams: Artur Jasinski and Partners Biuro Architektoniczne Sp. z o.o. from Cracow, Dick van Gameren Architektem from Amsterdam, Marcin Jojko from Rybnik (Poland) and Bartłomiej Nawrocki from Katowice (Poland). A special distinction was won by Marek Rytych from Warsaw, and ex aequo distinctions went to: HS 99 Herman and Smierzewski from Koszalin (Poland), Odile Deco Benoit Cornette Architectes DPLG DESS IEP PARIS from Paris, and Linea Sp. z o.o. from Poznan (Poland). Presenting the first prize, the jury chaired by engineer architect Bogdan Paczowski from Luxemburg, wrote: The original work evokes great symbolic expression; at the same time, it is connected with the foreseen site and its memory, and thus creates a unique point of reference to the culture and history of the town and the region, exerting influence at home and abroad. The conception of museum space descending underground emphasises the links between its collections with the mining history of Silesia, and the place of the black treasure concealed deep in the recesses of the Earth is now assumed by the treasures of culture and memory... In accordance with the programme of the new investment, the technical project will be completed in 2007/2008, construction work will be inaugurated in 2009 and completed in 2011; according to plans, the new building of the Silesian Museum will be presented to the town, the region, Poland, Europe and the world in 2012.
