The article shortly presents all achievements accomplished so far on the Macedonian Dialect Atlas (MDA) project on which the Institute for Macedonian language 'Krste Misirkov' in Skopje is working. Academician B. Vidoeski was the initiator of this project in the beginning of sixties in the last century, and he was the project manager until his death in 1998. In this period, the foundation of the project was laid and that means as follows: the questionnaire to collect dialect materials was composed, dialect spots were determined, a blank dialect map was composed, the dialect material was gathered sorted out into an organized card-file. A great number of linguistic maps were drawn up however the final decision concerning the presentation of the linguistic data on maps was not taken. In the recent period the work focused on the digitization of the MDA card-file which enables a thorough selection of relevant data and a map to be drawn. The topic of elaboration is lexis. Different lexemes are cartographed with different signs, and the function of the color of each sign is to provide a more clear-cut determination of the area in which a specified lexeme occurs. The article also provides the basic decisions connected with the first volume of the Atlas.
