The authoress traces the development of Czech linguistic terms 'nabodenicko kratke' and 'nabodenicko dluhe' (diacritic marks placed above the letters; 'nabodenicko kratke' having the form of a dot, 'nabodenicko dluhe' having the form of an acute, indicating length) and deals with their position in Czech linguistic terminology. The main part of the study focuses on the explanation why these marks were later erroneously connected with the Latin tractate 'Orthographia Bohemica' (Czech orthography), whose author - probably Jan Hus – provides a suggestion of an orthographic system using the diacritic marks.
