Since 1909 the National Museum in Cracow has owned an impressive faience jug with Gdansk's coat of arms. The artefact, which used to be in Mathias Bernson's collection, has long intrigued scholars, who have tried to find out its provenance. Depending on the current state of research, the jug was attributed to various workshops located in Delft, Gdansk or Hamburg. Only at the end of the 20th c. was it established that faience vessels of that type, commissioned by various European towns, were produced in Portugal. The jug from Cracow, made in 1637, is one of the oldest artefacts with Gdansk's coat of arms preserved in European museums.
