The conquest of the Malabar Coast has been depicted as a new form of European activity, of a distinctly different nature to the forms of contact present from the 16th until the 18th century. Due to the lack of space of Dialogue and to the limited opportunities for Encounter, the defensive processes of the Malabar societies might have led to a conservative approach, rendering difficult the possibility of finding 'New Transformations', which were necessary as a response to the new stimuli from outside. A hypothesis about the presence of internal factors contributing to the tensions, which eventually led to the loss of ecological equilibrium, has been put forward.
