The present study deals with the development and form of cultural activities in the surroundings of Mount Rip (Roudnice nad Labem District) in the final phase of formation of a modern Czech nation between 1860 and 1914. This Bohemian region, then situated at the language and ethnic boundary, maintained in the mentioned period of time close contacts with a number of important national artists who had links to the region owing to outstanding regional representatives. Attention of the Czech national movement was fixed upon the region also due to the existence of the nation's sacred hill, Mount Rip in that area. The study views the development of cultural activities taking place in the region as a process at the beginning of which the activities were carried out ‘on behalf of the nation' (national festivities of the 1860s) whereas at the end they were already taking place in the milieu of modern specific Czech culture (foundation of a Gallery of Modern Arts in Roudnice nad Labem in 1910).
