The main objective of the article is the analysis of the methods of the identification of Poznan burghers in the selected municipal books from the end of the 16th century, throughout the 17th century and until the end of the 18th century. A very elaborate description was supplemented with remarks on the stabilization of the discussed onomastic structures. Besides personal names (protonames), which are similar in form to the contemporary surnames, other genetic means of assigning persons can be encountered in the studied books: names and descriptive forms (including feminative names) elaborated to various degree. A rich repertoire of recorded linguistic means renders it possible to isolate the formations (qualitatively and quantitatively different) which put together, although in various configurations, formed the onomastic models of the then urban residents.
