The article presents an analysis of tendencies and demographic factors decisive for changes in the number of rural population and certain features of its structure that occurred in the first six-seven years of the present century. The basis for statistical analysis was provided by the data of the Central Statistical Office (GUS) relating to the current demographic statistics for the 2000-2006 period, the data supplied by the 2002 National Census showing the number of population and homes, and the results of Research into the Population's Economic Activity (BAEL).
