The poetic incipit of a sixteenth-century Ethiopian manuscript - the life of a monastery's prior, which is considered heretical, is like any expression steeped in a discursive formation which determines its existence. The following areas should be covered to describe it: the great Trinitarian dispute within Christianity, the tradition of Ethiopian literature, the reformist and theological dispute in Ethiopia in the period the expression under consideration was being created, the heretical literature of the Stephanites and the beliefs that are ascribed to them, the collection of Stephanites' gadls and their excerpts on Trinitarianism, the manuscript of Habta Sellasje's life, the incipit of which constitutes this expression along with its stylistic qualities. Moreover, it seems to be justified to examine the particular characteristics of the expression by enhancing the fact that it is dependent upon the religious language, the variety to which it belongs.
