SOCIO-ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF THE POPULATION OUTFLOW FROM THE SILESIAN PROVINCE

The paper attempts at identification of socio-economical factors of the outflow from the Silesian province in 2001. An analysis is based on the exponential model of Pareto type - the model widely used in gravitation models. Explanatory variables which refer to socio-economic development of each province (origin and destination provinces) reflect demographic processes as well as: the labour market, the economic potential of the region, population income, environment, the housing situation, the health care, the service sector, and also the technical and social infrastructure. Results confirm the restrictive influence of the distance between outflow and inflow regions on the prevalence of migration. The elasticity of the outflow from the Silesian province is relatively strong with respect to the average wage while low with respect to the distance. The outflow is characterized by the very low marginal substitution rate of distance in relation to the average wage. It indicates that a will to rise wages is much stronger than any inconvenience linked to the distance. The housing situation is recognized as one of the main motives to migrate. In 2001 a closer interrelation between the decision of 'the extension' of the outflow and the possible improvement of the living conditions could be observed.
