The Kimberley Process is the initiative of governments of Namibia, South Africa and Botswana to stop the trade in conflict diamonds. The first meeting was held in May 2000. After two years of negotiations, representatives of governments, the international diamond industry and NGOs (Global Witness and Partnership Africa Canada) created the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). Its aim is to prevent the trade in conflict diamonds - rough diamonds used by rebel movements to finance armed conflict aimed at undermining legitimate governments. The problem of conflict diamonds occurred in several wars in Africa - Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. Some observers add to this list the conflict in Liberia.
