The presented study concerns the political awareness of the members and activists of the Polish United Workers Party (PUWP) and their postulates, fears and critics addressed towards the Party authorities in the period spanning from the initiation of the Round Table negotiations on 6 February 1989 to the inauguration of preparations for the parliamentary elections held on 4 and 8 June 1989. The Party and its authorities attempted to act in the manner practised up to them and to assume responsibility for Polish issues as a whole - political, socio–economic, cultural, etc., although at the same time they no longer accentuated the fundamental principle of the system, i.e. the leading role of the Party. In this manner, silent acceptance of those principles was expressed and consent to some sort of a compromise with the opposition and to an evolution towards a new systemic situation was expressed. According to the Party, these conditions were to remain socialist but, simultaneously, to create some sort of an unidentified model that would combine socialism with democracy and, naturally, ensure the PUWP a key position in the state and Polish politics. At the same time, the Party and its authorities tried to govern the economy, particularly due to the erosion of the market and growing inflation; another objective was to radicalise the economic reform, thus creating hope for an improvement of living conditions, while remaining well aware of the fact that the Polish economy had found itself at a turning point. Despite all those endeavours made by the PUWP, the attainment of the assigned targets grew increasingly difficult and ultimately turned into an impossible task.
