The article is an attempt at reconstruction of the system of economic organization based on place names in Mazovia. These names constitute the single surviving remnant of the system of service organization in Poland. Servitude was a type of feudal rent; the basis for maintaining the service population remained agricultural and livestock farms. The full bloom of the service organization came in the 12th century, and its final disappearance took place at the turning point of the 13th and 14th centuries. Over 400 localities with service names have been preserved to the current day, of which 52 are in Mazovia. That is not a large number and places Mazovia as a region in last place in terms of numbers of service settlements dating from the Piast period.
