The problem has remained unsolved and the opinions among Indian and Western scholars regarding it differ considerably. The present author attempts to show the possible source of the '-ne' postposition taking into consideration its vast array of functions in selected varieties of Hindi. The material has been selected from different sources - vernacular grammars, texts and the author's own field notes.
