12 life science fields (6 from the clinical sciences and 6 from the basic sciences) were chosen for the evaluation of the scientific performance of European countries on the basis of citations received by journal articles published during 7 years. The country ranks were identical to the list of citations received in all science fields by the publications of 11 years. In the fields of pharmacology and pharmacy, the rank list of the 10 most cited scientists selected from the 30 most cited ones was compared to the ranks of the 10 most active producers of publications, and also to the ranks of scientists with the highest citation/article scores. It was shown that the extremely high publication activity works against the scientific niveau expressed in mean article citedness.
