Syntactic theories based on generative grammar frameworks seem to be hardly used in Latvia, if at all. Absence of this tradition in Latvia stems from the fact that Russian linguistic schools during the Soviet era were anti-generativist, and thus the approach was virtually inaccessible to the Soviet-ruled linguistic minority. In the West, generative theories are a strong pillar in current linguistic research, with a wide spectrum of research subjects and methodologies. This paper discusses the foundational views of generative grammar, draws principal distinctions among some generative frameworks and argues that functionalist and generativist positions may be regarded as complementary rather than incompatible.
