The paper has stemmed from a research-oriented street performance entitled “Our patches of life', realized during the Zielona Gora Science Days in 2010. The authoress has analyzed the city's social space as determined by the context of the event. She creates biography of the city and its inhabitants by taking fragments of conversations with passers-by (provoked by students) and photos, and 'sewing' them together into a collage (patchwork) that symbolizes that day's events. The main goals of the street performance was to decrease the distance between the inhabitants, students and scientists, to provoke the students to establish spontaneous relations with the passers-by, and finally to use elements of biographical research in the initiated conversations. The authoress offers insight into her own and other participants' personal experiences, stressing the change they have undergone as far as perceiving (redefining) the existing city space, relations with others and personal identities are concerned.
