In the article, the speech goes about the role of translation in the shaping of cultural and historical topography, which structures the life-world of the modern individual. The author applies Bernhard Waldenfels' phenomenological topography as a methodological matrix of his analysis. So, the translation is considered as a metaphor-creating practice aimed at mythologization of reality. Basing on the Klaus Held's conception of ethos, the author suggests introducing the notion of the 'metis ethos' into the scientific discourse. In addition to that, the methodological background of the research also includes post-colonial studies of imperial literature.
